NEWS REPORT: Chicago Finalizes Roster Change

The Chicago Cubs made a notable roster decision involving a veteran player just before continuing their impressive run on the field.

On Friday night, Chicago faced the Los Angeles Dodgers in California and secured a 6–4 victory, extending what has become one of the hottest streaks in Major League Baseball. Shortstop Dansby Swanson played a key role in the win, delivering two hits and driving in four runs to power the Cubs’ offense. The victory marked the team’s 10th consecutive win, their longest winning streak since the historic 2016 season, highlighting just how dominant they have been in recent games.

Ahead of the matchup, the Cubs announced a series of roster moves that included a decision on infielder Scott Kingery, a seven-year MLB veteran. The team selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Vince Velasquez, while placing left-handed reliever Caleb Thielbar on the 15-day injured list due to a left hamstring strain. As part of these adjustments, Kingery was designated for assignment, signaling that his time with the team could be coming to an end unless he is claimed or reassigned.

Kingery had seen limited action with the Cubs this season, appearing in just eight games. In that span, he posted a .250 batting average with one hit, scored two runs, and added a stolen base. Despite the small sample size, the move reflects the team’s need to manage roster space as they deal with injuries and maintain momentum.

Originally selected in the second round of the 2015 MLB Draft, Kingery began his career with the Philadelphia Phillies, where he spent his first four seasons. His most productive year came in 2019, when he hit .258 with 19 home runs, 55 RBIs, 64 runs scored, and 15 stolen bases across 126 games. Over time, he also had stints with the Los Angeles Angels before joining the Cubs.

Across his MLB career, Kingery has appeared in 352 games, compiling a .227 batting average along with 30 home runs, 96 RBIs, 137 runs scored, and 27 stolen bases. Now 31 years old, he brings experience but has struggled to maintain a consistent role at the major league level.

Meanwhile, the Cubs are thriving. With a 17–9 record through 26 games, they sit atop the National League Central and have been particularly strong during their recent stretch of play. They have also held their own on the road, going 6–4 away from Wrigley Field. After finishing their series against the Dodgers, the team is set to travel to face the San Diego Padres, looking to extend their winning streak even further.
