News and Update: Auburn Transfer Joins SEC Rival Vanderbilt Commodores Men’s Basketball

Former Auburn Tigers men’s basketball forward Sebastian Williams-Adams has intensified the sting of his departure by choosing to remain within the conference, committing to SEC rival Vanderbilt Commodores men’s basketball shortly after entering the transfer portal.

Thomas Dowd is the latest addition to Auburn's transfer portal class this offseason, following Creighton big man Owen Freeman, who announced his commitment earlier today. Story by: @jacktchambers

The decision comes as a sudden reversal. Williams-Adams had publicly stated on April 10 that he planned to return to Auburn for his sophomore season, only to change course days later and enter the portal. In a rapid turn of events, he secured a new destination in less than 24 hours, highlighting just how quickly the modern transfer process can unfold.

The 6-foot-8, 230-pound forward was expected to play a significant role for Auburn next season after showing promise during the Tigers’ run to the NIT championship. He delivered key performances along the way, including a flawless 15-point outing on 6-of-6 shooting against Seattle and a 13-point, all-around effort in the title game against Tulsa, where he also contributed defensively with blocks and steals while logging heavy minutes.

Despite that momentum, Auburn’s aggressive activity in the transfer portal appears to have influenced his decision. The additions of experienced frontcourt players like Owen Freeman and Thomas Dowd likely created uncertainty about his role and playing time. Williams-Adams ultimately opted for a fresh start after averaging 7.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.5 assists in over 27 minutes per game this past season.

His move strengthens a conference opponent while leaving Auburn to reshape its rotation once again, underscoring the fluid nature of roster building in today’s college basketball landscape.
