The St. Louis Cardinals have made a roster adjustment after placing third baseman Ramon Urias on the 10-day injured list due to right elbow lateral epicondylitis, more commonly known as tennis elbow.
The move comes as the team looks to manage both injuries and early-season performance struggles.
Urias, 31, last appeared in a game on Sunday against the Los Angeles Dodgers, where he went hitless in two at-bats during a 4–1 loss. He was replaced late in the game, with Nolan Gorman stepping in as a pinch hitter before taking over defensively at third base. That outing capped off a difficult start to the season for Urias, who is batting just .158 with two home runs and five RBIs across 25 games.
To fill the roster spot, St. Louis recalled Thomas Saggese from Triple-A Memphis, just one day after sending him down. The quick turnaround highlights the team’s need for infield depth as they navigate Urias’ absence. Saggese, 24, has struggled at the plate in limited major league action this season, hitting .170 with two RBIs in 18 games, but will now get another opportunity to contribute.
Despite his slow start in 2026, Urias brings a solid track record to the Cardinals. Over his career, which includes time with the Baltimore Orioles and Houston Astros, he has posted a .254 batting average with 52 home runs and 220 RBIs in more than 500 games. He is also recognized for his defensive excellence, having won the American League Gold Glove at third base in 2022.
The Cardinals signed Urias to a one-year deal in February, with a mutual option for 2027, hoping he would provide stability and veteran presence in the infield. While his early offensive struggles have been notable, his absence due to injury now adds another layer of uncertainty for the team as they look to stay competitive.
With Urias sidelined, St. Louis will rely on a mix of internal options, including Gorman and Saggese, to step up in the short term. The hope is that Urias can recover quickly and return to form, giving the Cardinals both defensive reliability and improved production at the plate as the season progresses.
