Hope is once again overflowing on the Plains, and Auburn football fans are dreaming far bigger than recent history might justify.

With Alex Golesh stepping in as the Tigers’ new head coach, optimism around the program has skyrocketed perhaps faster than anyone expected. Auburn supporters are already envisioning a dramatic turnaround in 2026, despite the program enduring one of the roughest stretches in its modern history.
According to a recent fan poll conducted by Auburn Undercover, expectations for Golesh’s first season are surprisingly ambitious. More than one-third of fans believe Auburn will win at least eight games this fall, while another sizable portion predicts a seven-win campaign. Even more striking, a notable percentage of the fanbase believes the Tigers could push into nine or even 10 victories in Year One under their new coach.
That level of confidence says everything about the emotional reset currently happening around Auburn football.
And yet, reality may not be so forgiving.
Auburn fans are buying into the Alex Golesh vision
Whenever a new coach arrives, hope follows. But Golesh’s arrival has sparked a particularly strong wave of excitement because of the offensive reputation he brings with him.
At South Florida, Golesh engineered one of the nation’s most explosive offenses, transforming the Bulls into a high-scoring, fast-paced attack that overwhelmed opponents with tempo and creativity. USF finished near the top nationally in both total offense and scoring, and quarterback Byrum Brown became one of the breakout stars of the season.
That success has Auburn fans believing a rapid rebuild is possible.
For a fanbase desperate to feel relevant again in the SEC, Golesh represents energy, innovation, and a fresh offensive identity all things Auburn has lacked for years.
But Auburn’s recent history tells a different story
The optimism is understandable, but Auburn’s recent track record offers a sobering reminder of how difficult quick fixes can be.
The Tigers have not posted a winning season since 2020, the final year under Gus Malzahn. Since then, Auburn has stumbled through a painful cycle of mediocrity and instability, posting consecutive losing records while struggling to establish any real momentum.
The program has cycled through coaches, systems, and promises, yet the results have remained largely the same.
Bryan Harsin arrived with confidence and lofty expectations but never truly connected with the program or the SEC landscape. Hugh Freeze followed with his own offensive pedigree and turnaround reputation after reviving Liberty, yet even that experiment collapsed before it could fully stabilize.
Now Golesh inherits a fanbase eager to believe again but also one that has repeatedly been disappointed.
Expectations may already be dangerously high
That’s what makes the current excitement both fascinating and risky.
Winning seven or eight games in the SEC is never easy, especially for a program still rebuilding its roster depth, confidence, and consistency. Auburn still faces one of the toughest schedules in college football annually, and turning offensive improvement into actual wins often takes longer than fans hope.
There’s also the challenge of culture-building. Golesh is not simply installing plays; he’s trying to reshape the identity of a proud but frustrated football program.
That process rarely happens overnight.
And while fans are dreaming about double-digit victories, a more realistic benchmark may simply be getting Auburn back to bowl eligibility and showing clear signs of long-term progress.
Auburn’s belief never disappears
Still, one thing remains undeniable: Auburn fans never stop believing.
That unwavering faith is part of what makes Jordan-Hare Stadium one of the most electric environments in college football. Even after years of disappointment, the fanbase continues to fill the stadium, convince itself a breakthrough is coming, and rally behind every new beginning.
In many ways, the poll results reflect more than optimism they reflect Auburn’s identity.
This is a program that has often thrived when expectations were low and chaos surrounded it. Auburn teams have historically produced their best moments when doubted, overlooked, or backed into a corner.
So while reality may eventually temper some of the offseason hype, the excitement surrounding Alex Golesh is very real.
Whether it leads to immediate success or simply lays the groundwork for a brighter future remains the biggest question of all.
