The Philadelphia Phillies appear to have found new life under interim manager Don Mattingly, and star slugger Kyle Schwarber is making it clear the clubhouse fully believes in the veteran skipper. Since replacing Rob Thomson in April, Mattingly has guided Philadelphia through a remarkable turnaround that has quickly put the team back into contention in the National League playoff race.

After a disastrous 9-19 start forced the Phillies front office, led by Dave Dombrowski, to make the rare decision to fire a manager so early in the season, Mattingly stepped into a difficult situation. The former MLB star and experienced manager immediately stabilized the club, helping Philadelphia post a dominant 14-4 record in his first 18 games at the helm.
The Phillies continued their hot streak Saturday with a 6-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates, securing their fifth straight series win under Mattingly. The surge has lifted Philadelphia from the bottom of the NL East standings into second place in just a few weeks, creating renewed optimism around a roster many believed was too talented to struggle for long.
Schwarber openly praised Mattingly’s leadership and experience, pointing to the confidence and trust the interim manager has brought into the clubhouse.
“When they made the change, you look at Donnie’s resume and everything he accomplished as both a player and manager,” Schwarber said. “He understands what it takes to win. There weren’t massive changes to what we do — we just had to start playing better baseball.”
That improvement has been obvious. Philadelphia’s veteran core, led by Schwarber, Bryce Harper, Trea Turner, and ace Zack Wheeler, has finally begun performing closer to expectations after a sluggish opening month. Despite losing left-hander Ranger Suárez in free agency before the season, the Phillies still believed they had the talent to compete deep into October.
Schwarber also highlighted the trust Mattingly has quickly built with his players, saying the team has responded positively to his steady approach and willingness to believe in the roster.
“With him leading us and trusting us, we’re trying different things and playing with confidence,” Schwarber added. “There’s a lot of trust in him, and he trusts us too.”
Mattingly’s extensive managerial background has clearly helped calm the situation in Philadelphia. Having previously managed the Los Angeles Dodgers and Miami Marlins, the longtime baseball figure recently earned the 900th managerial win of his career. His experience and credibility appear to have resonated immediately inside the Phillies clubhouse.
Philadelphia still faces work ahead, sitting eight games behind the Atlanta Braves in the NL East and several games back in the NL wild-card race. However, with nearly four months remaining in the regular season, the Phillies suddenly look like a dangerous team again and Mattingly has quickly earned the respect and attention of the entire organization.
