The Minnesota Vikings could be facing an unexpected quarterback dilemma involving J.J. McCarthy, and former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz may have a role in how the situation develops.
Wentz, who once served as Philadelphia’s franchise quarterback, is no longer viewed as a long-term starter around the NFL. However, his experience and recent progress as a veteran option have reportedly created an interesting situation in Minnesota as the Vikings evaluate their quarterback room heading into the 2026 season.
McCarthy entered the year as one of the most important young players on Minnesota’s roster. After being selected in the first round, the former Michigan standout has been viewed as the quarterback the Vikings hope can eventually become their long-term answer at the position.
However, the organization appears to have more questions surrounding the position than it expected.
Wentz’s presence has added another layer to those questions. The veteran quarterback has been working to re-establish himself in the league, and his experience could give Minnesota an alternative if the team becomes concerned about McCarthy’s readiness or consistency.

McCarthy remains the bigger investment
Despite the uncertainty, the Vikings’ biggest investment remains McCarthy.
Minnesota drafted him with the expectation that he could become the centerpiece of its offense for years. The organization has spent considerable time developing him, and abandoning that plan would be a major decision.
The more realistic possibility may be that Wentz pushes McCarthy rather than replaces him outright.
Competition could force McCarthy to improve quickly, while Wentz’s experience could give the Vikings another option if the young quarterback struggles.
That scenario could become particularly important if Minnesota believes it has a roster capable of competing for the playoffs right now.
Vikings face a difficult balancing act
