The New York Mets’ already turbulent 2026 season has taken another difficult turn, with recent trade discussions involving star pitcher Clay Holmes now shifting significantly after a major injury update. What was once expected to be one of the biggest pitching storylines at the MLB trade deadline has suddenly changed course due to an unfortunate setback.
Holmes, who has been one of the Mets’ most reliable arms this season with a stellar 1.86 ERA, was widely viewed as a prime trade candidate heading into the deadline. With New York sliding out of contention and potential roster changes looming, rival teams were expected to show strong interest in the right-hander especially given his impending opt-out and strong contract value.
However, those expectations have now been disrupted following a fractured tibia suffered by Holmes. According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, the injury significantly alters his trade outlook, making it far more likely that he remains with the Mets rather than being moved midseason.
Nightengale noted that while Holmes was previously shaping up to be one of the most sought-after pitchers on the market, his current injury status has introduced too much uncertainty for contenders to invest heavily. Recovery time, performance concerns, and risk factors all now play a major role in limiting his trade value.
Although a trade is not entirely off the table, the reality is that interest from other teams is expected to shrink considerably. Any potential deal would likely require a minimal return, something the Mets are unwilling to accept for a pitcher of Holmes’ caliber even in a down season.
Given those circumstances, New York appears more inclined to retain Holmes through the remainder of the year. Even if he ultimately departs in free agency after opting out of his contract, the Mets may prefer that outcome over selling low while he recovers from injury.
It’s a frustrating but logical development for a Mets team already dealing with inconsistency and injuries across the roster. Holmes remains a valuable asset when healthy, but his current situation has all but reshaped his trade market—leaving him likely to finish the season in New York.
