JUST IN: Zack Wheeler Dominates Again in Phillies’ 6-0 Victory Over Pittsburgh

The Philadelphia Phillies continued their hot streak in dominant fashion Sunday afternoon, shutting out the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-0 behind another brilliant outing from Zack Wheeler and a statement home run from Bryce Harper against Pittsburgh ace Paul Skenes.

Wheeler looked every bit like the staff ace Philadelphia desperately needed back in the rotation, delivering seven scoreless innings while allowing just four hits. The veteran right-hander struck out eight batters and issued only one walk as he improved to 3-0 on the season. Since returning from the injured list after surgery to remove a blood clot from his upper right arm, Wheeler has been nearly untouchable, posting a sparkling 1.99 ERA across six starts.

Philadelphia’s bullpen kept the momentum rolling as Jonathan Bowlan and Tanner Banks combined to finish off the five-hit shutout. The victory secured a three-game sweep for the Phillies and continued a remarkable turnaround after their difficult start to the season.

Bryce Harper provided the game’s biggest highlight in the sixth inning when he launched his 12th home run of the year off reigning National League Cy Young winner Paul Skenes. The blast gave the Phillies a 3-0 lead and energized an offense that has steadily come alive during the club’s recent surge.

The Phillies had already broken through in the fifth inning after Skenes carried a 20-inning scoreless streak into the game. Rookie Justin Crawford produced the first run with a groundout before Trea Turner followed with an RBI single to extend the lead. Philadelphia then pulled away in the sixth after Alec Bohm singled and Brandon Marsh doubled, ending Skenes’ outing. Bryson Stott later delivered a two-run double off reliever Isaac Mattson, though both runs were charged to Skenes.

Skenes, now 6-3, endured one of the roughest outings of his young career, matching a career-high by allowing five earned runs over five-plus innings. Despite striking out seven and walking just one, the Pirates star could not slow down a Phillies lineup that has suddenly rediscovered its rhythm.

The victory pushed Philadelphia to 24-23, marking the first time the club has climbed above .500 since April 7. The Phillies were struggling at 8-18 less than a month ago before Wheeler’s return helped spark a dramatic turnaround. Since activating the right-hander on April 25, Philadelphia has gone 16-5 and emerged as one of baseball’s hottest teams.

Meanwhile, Pittsburgh continues to slide, losing four of its last five games as the offense once again failed to provide support.

The Phillies will try to keep rolling Monday night when rookie right-hander Andrew Painter takes the mound against the visiting Cincinnati Reds to open a three-game series. The Pirates, meanwhile, head to St. Louis on Tuesday after an off day, with Mitch Keller scheduled to start against Matthew Liberatore.
