Jacksonville High School head coach Reggie Swinton is making it clear that Kentucky may have landed far more than just a solid recruit in 2027 running back commit Mason Ball in his eyes, the Wildcats are getting a “dominant player” with the potential to develop into something special at the next level.
Kentucky football added Ball, a 3-star running back from Jacksonville, Arkansas, over the weekend, beating out programs like Arkansas, North Carolina, and Vanderbilt for his commitment. The 5-foot-11, 185-pound back is currently ranked No. 737 nationally, the No. 57 running back in the country, and the No. 3 overall prospect in the state of Arkansas according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.
But for Swinton a former NFL return specialist who played for the Dallas Cowboys, Green Bay Packers, Detroit Lions, and Arizona Cardinals Ball’s value goes far beyond recruiting rankings. Swinton has coached him since he was just five years old through the Arkansas Lions youth football program and has watched his development from the very beginning.
What stands out most, Swinton says, is Ball’s relentless drive.
His work ethic, according to the longtime coach, separates him from most high school athletes he has been around. Swinton describes him as a player who consistently goes beyond what is expected, putting in extra effort that even many successful athletes do not match. In his view, as long as Ball stays healthy and continues on his current path, his ceiling is extremely high.
Ball’s football journey began early. He first joined Swinton’s youth program in 2015 as a five-year-old center before gradually evolving into one of the most productive and dynamic skill position players in the state. Swinton recalls a moment from Ball’s early days when he first took a handoff in practice and immediately broke free for a long run — a glimpse, he says, of the explosiveness that has defined his development ever since.
That explosiveness has translated to the high school level as well. During his junior season, Ball rushed for 1,401 yards and 27 touchdowns while averaging an impressive 7.61 yards per carry. He also contributed in the passing game with 17 receptions for 131 yards, showcasing his ability to impact multiple phases of the offense.
Beyond the numbers, Swinton believes Ball’s biggest advantage is his football intelligence and versatility. Having worked with him for years within the same system, Swinton has helped develop his understanding of blocking schemes, assignments, and situational awareness — skills that should ease his transition to college football.
In Swinton’s view, that long-term coaching relationship has helped shape Ball into a more complete player than many of his peers. With years of consistent training, familiarity with the system, and steady growth in both physical and mental aspects of the game, the Kentucky commit enters college with a foundation that many recruits do not have.
For Kentucky, the message from Ball’s longtime coach is simple: they are not just getting a promising running back — they are getting a player built on years of development, discipline, and a work ethic that could eventually make him a standout at the SEC level.
