NEWS REPORT: Corey Seager Rehab Slows, Rangers Left Waiting for Star Shortstop’s Return

The Texas Rangers are still dealing with uncertainty surrounding star shortstop Corey Seager, as concerns grow over the progress of his recovery from lower back inflammation. Manager Skip Schumaker provided an updated but cautious assessment, revealing that Seager’s rehabilitation has not advanced at the expected pace, raising questions about when the veteran slugger might return to game action.

The Rangers had initially hoped Seager would be ready to face live pitching over the weekend as part of the next step in his recovery process. However, those plans have now been postponed indefinitely. While Schumaker stopped short of calling it a setback, the delay is nonetheless troubling for a Texas offense that has already struggled with consistency throughout the 2026 season.

Seager has been sidelined since mid-May after first experiencing back spasms that later developed into lower back inflammation, ultimately forcing him onto the injured list. Although he has recently resumed light baseball activities — including jogging, cage work, and strength training — lingering discomfort has prevented him from progressing to more intense rehabilitation work.

Back injuries are particularly tricky for baseball players, especially infielders like Seager who depend heavily on rotational movement at the plate and quick, explosive reactions in the field. As a result, the Rangers are taking a conservative approach with one of their most important offensive players, prioritizing long-term health over a rushed return.

Before landing on the injured list, Seager was already in a difficult stretch at the plate, enduring one of the roughest slumps of his career. He went 0-for-27 during a skid that coincided with the onset of his back problems. At the time of his injury, he was hitting just .179 with seven home runs and 20 RBIs across 42 games in 2026 numbers well below his usual production.

Despite the slow start, Seager remains a central figure in Texas’ lineup. Over his career, he has established himself as one of MLB’s premier offensive shortstops, carrying a lifetime batting average near .290 with over 200 home runs and an OPS above .870. His résumé also includes five All-Star selections and two World Series MVP awards, first with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2020 and later with the Rangers during their 2023 championship run.

Given his importance to the franchise, Texas is being extremely careful not to rush him back too soon. The organization is fully aware that back injuries can worsen quickly if not properly managed, a point Schumaker emphasized when discussing the situation earlier in the week.

For now, Seager’s return remains uncertain, leaving the Rangers to continue navigating their season without one of their most influential hitters and leaders.
