One of Kentucky basketball’s premier recruiting priorities in the 2027 class remains five-star wing Ryan Hampton, a consensus top-five national prospect whose stock continues to draw heavy attention from elite programs across the country.
Hampton, currently starring at DME Academy, has been firmly on the radar of several blue-blood programs, including Kentucky, as well as other high-major contenders. Given his rapid development and the demand for elite wing talent, there had been growing speculation that he could potentially accelerate his timeline and reclassify into the 2026 recruiting class following the Peach Jam circuit in July. However, Hampton has now directly addressed those rumors, making it clear in an interview with recruiting analyst Sam Lance that he intends to remain in the 2027 class, shutting down any immediate reclassification talk.
That confirmation is viewed as a positive development for Kentucky, which has been building an early and consistent relationship with the highly touted prospect. The Wildcats, led in his recruitment by assistant coach Mo Williams, have stayed actively engaged, reportedly maintaining weekly communication with Hampton as they work to position themselves strongly for his eventual decision.
Unsurprisingly, competition for Hampton’s commitment is intense. He has already attracted widespread national attention, with multiple programs aggressively pursuing him. Hampton himself acknowledged the level of interest, noting that “everybody’s reaching out,” underscoring just how crowded his recruitment has become.
Among the schools most closely linked to him, LSU has emerged as a perceived frontrunner, largely due to its longstanding connection dating back to head coach Will Wade’s earlier recruiting efforts at NC State. Both LSU and Kentucky have already hosted him for visits, and additional trips, including one to Lexington, are expected as his recruitment continues to unfold.
While there is no firm timetable for a decision, Hampton indicated that the process is gradually moving toward a conclusion, though he emphasized that it is still not imminent. “It’s getting time to make that decision, but no time soon,” he said, suggesting that he will continue evaluating his options carefully.
When asked about what he values most in a coaching staff, Hampton highlighted development and accountability as key factors. He is looking for a coach who is demanding and honest, saying he wants someone who will “get on me every single day” and not “sugarcoat it,” while also helping him grow not only as a basketball player but as a person off the court.
