The St. Louis Cardinals have been dealt another setback in their outfield rotation as rookie outfielder Nathan Church is set to miss at least the next stretch of games after being placed on the 10-day injured list.
Church’s IL stint, retroactive to May 21, comes after he suffered a left shoulder strain that initially began as minor discomfort but worsened over the course of several days. According to team updates, imaging revealed no major structural damage, offering some relief for St. Louis, though inflammation in the shoulder will still require further evaluation. He is scheduled to meet with a specialist on Tuesday to determine the next steps in his recovery, and while the injury is not considered severe, his return timeline remains uncertain beyond the minimum IL period.
Manager Oli Marmol noted that Church first felt the issue ahead of a midweek matchup, but the discomfort intensified and did not improve, ultimately leading to the roster move. In the meantime, the Cardinals have called up Bryan Torres to help stabilize the outfield depth.
Church has been one of the more encouraging young contributors for St. Louis this season. In 45 appearances, the rookie has provided solid production both offensively and defensively, posting a .247/.282/.390 slash line with five home runs, 18 RBIs, four stolen bases, and a .672 OPS while showing steady growth in his first extended MLB opportunity.
His absence comes at an inopportune time for a Cardinals outfield already managing shifting pieces. Torres made an immediate impression after his promotion, delivering a strong debut performance in the doubleheader against the Cincinnati Reds, going 3-for-8 with a home run, two walks, two RBIs, and a run scored—offering the club an encouraging short-term solution.
The outfield situation could soon become even more crowded. Veteran Lars Nootbaar is nearing activation from a rehab assignment, while Victor Scott II and Jordan Walker remain key parts of the mix. Once everyone is healthy, St. Louis will face difficult roster decisions regarding playing time and roles across a suddenly deep but complicated outfield group.
For now, however, the focus remains on Church’s recovery, with the Cardinals hoping the injury proves to be a short-term setback rather than a longer-term disruption to one of their promising young bats.
