Despite their reputations as aggressive spenders and perennial contenders, both the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies reportedly appear to be on the outside looking in when it comes to a potential blockbuster pursuit of Tarik Skubal, a superstar left-hander many believe could eventually command a contract approaching $500 million.
In today’s MLB landscape, it is rarely wise to completely rule out powerhouse franchises like the Mets or Phillies from entering the trade market for elite talent. Both organizations have shown in recent years that they are willing to spend heavily, trade premium prospects, and make bold moves in an effort to compete for championships. However, according to recent insider reporting, neither club is currently viewed as a serious contender to land the dominant Detroit Tigers ace.
For the Mets, the lack of involvement may not come as much of a surprise. The club has struggled mightily this season, raising questions about whether pursuing a massive win-now acquisition makes sense at this stage. Under manager Carlos Mendoza, New York has failed to find consistency, and recent losses have only intensified concerns about the team’s direction heading toward the trade deadline.
The Phillies’ situation, however, is a bit more puzzling. Philadelphia entered the season with championship aspirations and still remains very much alive in the playoff race despite an inconsistent start. Sitting near the .500 mark, the Phillies continue to believe they can secure a postseason spot, especially through the National League Wild Card race. Adding a pitcher of Skubal’s caliber could instantly elevate them into one of baseball’s most dangerous October teams.
Still, reports suggest Philadelphia may be reluctant to part with the elite prospect package likely required to acquire the two-time Cy Young-winning lefty. Unlike some organizations with deeper farm systems, the Phillies are believed to be cautious about sacrificing their young talent, particularly given the importance of maintaining long-term roster stability.
According to USA Today insider Bob Nightengale, rival executives around the league now expect the bidding war for Skubal to center around only a handful of franchises capable of both absorbing the remaining $32 million on his contract and surrendering the premium prospects demanded by Detroit. The reported frontrunners are the Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees, and Toronto Blue Jays.
As the Tigers continue to slide in the standings, speculation surrounding Skubal’s future has only intensified. If Detroit ultimately decides to move its ace before the deadline, the race for one of baseball’s premier pitchers could reshape the balance of power across the league. Meanwhile, both the Mets and Phillies may be forced to explore alternative paths to strengthen their rotations for the stretch run.
