Bo Bichette’s struggles since his move from the Toronto Blue Jays to the New York Mets have become one of the most surprising talking points of the season, with his early performance in New York falling far short of expectations.
As Billy Heyen reports, there are multiple ways to frame the downturn in form, and even statistical comparisons involving former teammates have only highlighted how difficult things have become for the Mets shortstop. One notable comparison involves Andrés Giménez, who remains with the Blue Jays and has stepped into the shortstop role following Bichette’s departure.
While Giménez is not typically known for elite offensive production, his 2026 numbers have nonetheless outpaced Bichette’s across nearly every key category. A widely shared post on X pointed out that Giménez currently leads Bichette in home runs, RBIs, stolen bases, doubles, triples, OPS, and WAR—an illustration of just how stark the contrast has become this season.
Bichette, meanwhile, has struggled to find any consistent rhythm at the plate. Through his early tenure with the Mets, he is batting just .225, a figure that has slightly improved during a recent brief hot stretch. He has managed only five home runs in 227 at-bats, while his overall production metrics have remained well below league expectations.
Perhaps most concerning is his advanced statistical output, with Baseball Reference assigning him a negative Wins Above Replacement (-0.5 WAR), underscoring the depth of his struggles. His current OPS sits at a disappointing .591, a significant drop for a player who was once regarded as one of the more dynamic infield hitters in the league.
The downturn has been especially puzzling given Bichette’s age—just 28—and his previous track record with Toronto, where he was considered a cornerstone of the franchise’s offense. While it remains impossible to determine how he would have performed had he stayed with the Blue Jays, the contrast has only intensified scrutiny of his move to New York.
With the Mets investing heavily in his services on a $126 million deal, expectations remain high, but so far, Bichette has not been able to deliver consistent production. As the season approaches its midpoint, questions continue to grow about whether he can rediscover his form or if his struggles will persist throughout the remainder of the campaign.
