The Philadelphia Phillies are increasingly viewed as a team likely to be active buyers ahead of the MLB trade deadline, with expectations growing that the front office will pursue a major upgrade to boost a struggling offense and secure a postseason push.
At present, Philadelphia sits just above the .500 mark and is 1.5 games shy of a Wild Card spot in the National League. While that position reflects recent improvement, it is worth noting how far the team has come just a month earlier, the Phillies were among the lowest-performing clubs in the league. The turnaround has been encouraging, but it has not fully masked ongoing offensive concerns.
One of the most pressing issues for Philadelphia has been run production. The Phillies are averaging only 3.90 runs per game this season, a figure that ranks among the bottom three in Major League Baseball. The lack of consistent offense has been especially noticeable in the outfield, where production has lagged and reliability has been inconsistent.
Because of these struggles, speculation has begun to build around potential trade targets, with Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller suggesting the Phillies are positioned to land one of the top available outfielders on the market. Rather than naming a single player, Miller highlighted a group of elite possibilities that could be on Philadelphia’s radar: Byron Buxton, Mike Trout, Riley Greene, and Jarren Duran.
Among that group, Trout would represent the most high-profile acquisition. However, league insiders remain skeptical that the Los Angeles Angels would seriously consider moving the former MVP and franchise cornerstone during the season, especially given recent reports suggesting he is unlikely to be dealt.
If Trout is effectively off the table, Buxton could emerge as one of the most impactful alternatives. Known for his rare combination of elite defense and power at the plate, Buxton has previously earned both a Platinum Glove and a Silver Slugger Award. However, his value comes with significant risk due to an extensive injury history, with the star outfielder rarely surpassing 100 games in a season since entering the league. Additionally, Minnesota’s position in the Wild Card race could influence whether they choose to buy or sell at the deadline.
That uncertainty may push Philadelphia to explore more realistic trade scenarios, potentially targeting either Greene from Detroit or Duran from Boston. While Detroit currently sits near the bottom of the standings and could become a seller, Greene’s long-term contract control makes him a difficult player to pry away. He is not set to reach free agency until 2029, which could significantly raise the asking price.
Of the group, Duran may represent the most attainable option. The Red Sox have struggled with consistency and possess depth in the outfield, which could allow them to move a piece if the right offer is presented. For Philadelphia, that flexibility could present an opportunity to add a dynamic, high-energy bat without overpaying compared to other targets.
If the Phillies do complete a deal for a starting-caliber outfielder, it could have major implications for the current roster, particularly in right field, where performance has been inconsistent. With limited offensive output and a high payroll already in place, any major acquisition would signal an all-in approach from the front office as they attempt to position themselves for a deep playoff run.
