The Philadelphia Phillies may be preparing for an aggressive approach ahead of the MLB trade deadline as they look to strengthen a lineup that has shown inconsistency despite recent improvement in overall form.
After a sluggish start to the 2026 season, Philadelphia has managed to climb back into postseason contention and currently sits just outside a playoff position. With the roster showing enough talent to compete deep into October, the front office is widely expected to explore upgrades in key offensive areas over the coming weeks.
According to ESPN MLB insider Jeff Passan, one name that has surfaced in connection with the Phillies is Baltimore Orioles slugger Taylor Ward, a proven power hitter who could help address Philadelphia’s struggles in the outfield and overall run production.
Passan highlighted Ward as a strong positional fit, noting that while Philadelphia has elite talent at the top of its lineup, the supporting cast has been inconsistent. He suggested that Ward could slot into either corner outfield spot while also providing lineup balance behind stars such as Kyle Schwarber, Bryce Harper, and Brandon Marsh.
Ward, who joined the Orioles after being traded from the Los Angeles Angels, brings a strong offensive résumé despite a slower start to the 2026 campaign. In the 2025 season, he delivered a breakout performance with 36 home runs and 103 RBIs, both career highs, establishing himself as one of the more productive power bats in the league.
While his current numbers are more modest hitting .252 with 2 home runs and 17 RBIs so far this season—evaluators believe his power potential remains intact and that a change of environment could help him return to peak production.
Philadelphia’s offensive issues have been a major talking point this season. Despite strong contributions from the top of the order, the team has struggled with consistency throughout the rest of the lineup, ranking near the bottom of the league in both batting average (.225, 29th) and runs scored (29th overall). This imbalance has placed additional pressure on the pitching staff, which has otherwise performed at a high level.
Even so, the Phillies remain confident in their direction. Bryce Harper has publicly acknowledged the need for improved offensive output but emphasized that the team’s recent progress and strong pitching give them a foundation to build on as the season continues.
As Philadelphia sits at 32–29 and just half a game out of a Wild Card spot, the organization is expected to remain active in the trade market. If they decide to pursue a major offensive upgrade, Ward’s combination of power and versatility could make him a prime target in their push toward the postseason.
