NEWS REPORT: Mets DFA Bruján, Open Door for New Infield Addition

The New York Mets made another roster adjustment ahead of Tuesday’s matchup against the Cincinnati Reds, parting ways with struggling infielder Vidal Bruján in a move designed to create space for a newly acquired infield option.

According to SNY’s Chelsea Janes, the Mets designated Bruján foBrujánr assignment, effectively removing him from the 40-man roster after a brief and unproductive stint with the club. The infielder appeared in just nine games for New York, managing only one hit in 13 at-bats while posting a modest .538 OPS during his short time with the team.

Bruján’s departure continues a turbulent stretch in his career. Once viewed as a promising multi-tool prospect, he was highly regarded in the Tampa Bay Rays system and featured prominently on Baseball America’s Top 100 prospects list from 2019 through 2022. At that time, evaluators praised his speed, defensive versatility, and ability to make consistent contact, even though his power production was considered limited. However, he has struggled to translate that early potential into sustained Major League success, leading to frequent movement between teams in recent seasons. The Mets represent his fourth organization in just the past two years.

In a corresponding roster development, New York is expected to bring in infielder Zack Short, who was recently claimed off waivers. Short, like Bruján, has spent much of his career as a journeyman utility infielder, moving between clubs while providing defensive flexibility across multiple infield positions. So far in the 2026 season, he has already seen action with both the Houston Astros and Detroit Tigers.

Over the course of his Major League career, Short has appeared in 264 games and owns a career slash line of .172/.273/.292 with 15 home runs and a .565 OPS. While his offensive numbers have remained below league average, he continues to find opportunities in the league thanks to his defensive reliability at shortstop, second base, and third base, making him a useful depth piece for infield-heavy rotations.

For Bruján, the designation for assignment likely sends him back to waivers once again. He previously cleared waivers earlier in the season after being removed from New York’s roster before Opening Day, remaining with the organization until this latest decision.
