News Update: K-State’s Tah Chikomba Emerges as Bowerman Award Contender

Kansas State track and field standout Tah Chikomba has been named a semifinalist for The Bowerman, one of the most prestigious individual honors in collegiate track and field. The announcement was made Thursday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, placing Chikomba among the nation’s elite athletes following a remarkable 2026 season.

K-State's Tah Chikomba named National Men's Field Athlete of the Year

The junior long jumper becomes just the second athlete in Kansas State history to reach the semifinalist stage of The Bowerman, joining Erik Kynard, who earned the distinction in 2012 and 2013.

Chikomba’s selection comes after a breakthrough outdoor campaign that established him as one of the top field athletes in college track and field. Earlier this month, the Zimbabwe native captured the NCAA Outdoor Championship in the long jump with a school-record leap of 8.37 meters (27 feet, 5.5 inches). The performance not only secured a national title but also made him just the second Wildcat to win the NCAA outdoor long jump crown since Herb Hoskins accomplished the feat in 1951.

His championship-winning jump was also the longest mark recorded by an NCAA outdoor champion in the event since 2018, further highlighting the significance of his achievement on the national stage.

Before his NCAA title run, Chikomba delivered another historic performance at the NCAA West Preliminary in May. He recorded an eye-popping leap of 8.75 meters (28 feet, 8.5 inches) with wind assistance, setting the best all-conditions mark in NCAA history. The jump surpassed the previous collegiate all-conditions record of 8.74 meters set by Erick Walder in 1997 and ranks among the best all-conditions performances ever recorded worldwide.

Chikomba stands out on this year’s Bowerman semifinalist list as the only jumper selected. The group features a mix of elite sprinters, distance runners, and throwers from some of the nation’s top programs, underscoring the impact of his accomplishments in the field events.

The three male finalists for The Bowerman will be announced on June 30, with fan voting scheduled to run through July 2. Winners will ultimately be recognized as the top male and female athletes in NCAA track and field for the 2026 season.

With a national championship, multiple record-breaking performances, and now recognition as a Bowerman semifinalist, Chikomba has continued to elevate both his own profile and Kansas State’s track and field program on the national stage. His historic season has already secured a place among the greatest individual campaigns in school history, and he remains in contention for the sport’s highest collegiate honor.
