NEWS REPORT: Phillies Crush Pirates Behind Sánchez Gem

The Philadelphia Phillies continued their strong run of form on Tuesday night, cruising to an emphatic 8-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates at Citizens Bank Park behind another outstanding performance from left-hander Cristopher Sánchez. The ace delivered seven scoreless innings, striking out nine batters while allowing only three hits and two walks to improve to 10-3 on the season, becoming the first starting pitcher in Major League Baseball to reach double-digit wins in 2026.

Sánchez once again proved to be a nightmare for Pittsburgh’s lineup. After throwing nine scoreless innings against the Pirates in an earlier meeting this season, he extended his dominance by adding another seven shutout frames, giving him 16 consecutive scoreless innings against Pittsburgh this year. Needing just 92 pitches to complete his outing, the left-hander consistently overpowered hitters with a mix of sharp command and swing-and-miss stuff.

The Phillies’ offense provided early support in the second inning. Alec Bohm opened the rally with a single before Bubba Chandler retired the next batter. Chandler then hit J.T. Realmuto with a pitch and surrendered a single to Gabriel Rincones Jr., loading the bases. Rookie Justin Crawford battled through a lengthy at-bat, fouling off five pitches before lining a clutch two-run single into left field to give Philadelphia a 2-0 advantage.

Sánchez took care of the rest, escaping minor threats throughout his outing. He issued leadoff walks in both the third and fourth innings but stranded both runners without allowing a run. Billy Cook doubled in the fifth, yet Sánchez calmly retired the next two hitters to keep the Pirates off the scoreboard. Pittsburgh’s best opportunity came in the sixth when rookie Esmerlyn Valdez singled to begin the inning, but Sánchez responded by retiring the next three batters before finishing his night with a flawless seventh inning.

The Phillies broke the game open in the bottom of the seventh. Gabriel Rincones Jr. started the inning by drawing a walk before birthday celebrant Trea Turner delivered an RBI double to extend the lead to 3-0. Kyle Schwarber followed with a single, putting runners on the corners and forcing the Pirates to replace Chandler with reliever Isaac Mattson.

Philadelphia continued to capitalize after the pitching change. Bryce Harper lined an RBI single to center field, making it 4-0, while Brandon Marsh added another run with a fielder’s-choice groundout to stretch the advantage to five runs.

Turner put the finishing touches on the offensive display in the eighth inning. Celebrating his 33rd birthday, the veteran shortstop crushed a two-run opposite-field home run after already collecting an RBI double earlier in the game. His homer highlighted a three-run frame that pushed the Phillies’ lead to 8-0 and removed any remaining suspense.

Justin Crawford enjoyed one of the best games of his young career, finishing with three hits and three RBIs to lead Philadelphia’s offense. Turner also drove in three runs while recording a home run and a double, and Harper contributed an RBI hit during the decisive seventh inning.

Despite the loss, Pittsburgh rookie Esmerlyn Valdez continued to swing the bat well, going 2-for-3 with a walk. However, his four-game home run streak came to an end as Sánchez and the Phillies’ pitching staff kept the Pirates from mounting any offensive momentum.

Pirates starter Bubba Chandler fell to 3-8 after allowing five runs on seven hits across 6 1/3 innings. Although he struck out six batters and walked two, Philadelphia’s timely hitting proved too much to overcome.

Out of the bullpen, Jonathan Bowlan worked through traffic in the eighth by allowing a walk and a single but struck out the other three hitters he faced. Lou Trivino then handled the ninth inning, surrendering only a single before closing out the Phillies’ 10th shutout victory of the season.

With the win, Philadelphia improved its recent form by securing its eighth victory in the last 11 games. The Pirates, meanwhile, saw their two-game winning streak come to an end. The victory also evened the four-game series at one game apiece as both clubs prepared for the remaining two contests.
