METS UPDATE: McLean Shines as Mets Blank Blue Jays

The New York Mets received a stellar performance from rookie right-hander Nolan McLean on Tuesday night, riding his dominant outing to a 3-0 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays at Rogers Centre. McLean delivered six scoreless innings while striking out seven batters, helping the Mets snap a recent stretch of poor form and even their three-game series with Toronto at one game apiece.

McLean improved to 5-5 on the season after allowing just five hits and two walks across six impressive innings. The young pitcher consistently worked out of trouble, using his power arsenal to keep the Blue Jays off the scoreboard while recording seven strikeouts. His latest outing further showcased his growing confidence and ability to handle pressure against a dangerous lineup.

The Mets’ offense supplied just enough support, relying on solo home runs from catchers Francisco Alvarez and Luis Torrens. Alvarez broke the scoreless tie in the fifth inning with a towering solo blast to center field, launching a 1-2 fastball from Toronto starter Kevin Gausman. The home run provided New York with a 1-0 lead and gave McLean the cushion he needed to continue attacking hitters.

Torrens added another insurance run in the seventh inning when he connected on a 2-2 cutter from reliever Mason Fluharty, sending the ball into the Mets’ bullpen beyond the right-field fence. The solo shot doubled New York’s advantage and further frustrated a Blue Jays club that struggled to generate offense throughout the night.

The Mets added one final run in the ninth inning without recording an extra-base hit. A.J. Ewing reached on a leadoff single before advancing to second on a failed pickoff attempt by Tommy Nance, who was charged with an error. Ewing later moved to third on a groundout and scored on Brett Baty’s sacrifice fly to center field, extending the lead to 3-0.

McLean faced several challenging situations but remained composed throughout his outing. Toronto’s best scoring opportunity came in the fourth inning when Daulton Varsho doubled with two outs and Luis Urías followed with a walk. However, McLean induced a ground ball from Yohendrick Pinango to escape the inning without allowing a run.

Kevin Gausman also pitched well despite taking the loss. The veteran right-hander completed six innings, surrendering only one run on five hits while issuing two walks and matching McLean with seven strikeouts. Gausman repeatedly limited the damage, including escaping a fourth-inning jam after Juan Soto walked and former Blue Jay Bo Bichette singled before the Mets advanced both runners into scoring position.

Former Toronto star Bo Bichette enjoyed a solid return to Rogers Centre, finishing 1-for-4 at the plate while making several impressive defensive plays at third base. Juan Soto contributed by drawing a key walk, while Luis Torrens and Francisco Alvarez provided all of the offensive power New York ultimately needed.

Following McLean’s departure, the Mets’ bullpen completed the shutout with a flawless effort. Brooks Raley tossed a perfect seventh inning while striking out two batters, and Luke Weaver followed with a clean eighth. Closer Devin Williams worked around a ninth-inning single to secure his 12th save of the season and preserve New York’s shutout victory.

For Toronto, Luis Urías reached base three times with two singles and a walk, but the Blue Jays failed to capitalize on their scoring chances. The club also missed the presence of first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who was scratched from the lineup before the game because of back tightness.

The victory marked only the Mets’ second win in their last 11 games as they continued a seven-game road trip on a positive note. Meanwhile, the Blue Jays dropped to 2-7 during their 10-game homestand, setting up a decisive rubber match on Canada Day with both teams looking to claim the series.
