The upcoming series also begins an important six-game road trip that could significantly shape the Cubs’ standing entering the second half of the season. Fortunately for Chicago, playing away from Wrigley Field has not been a problem recently. The Cubs have won six of their last seven road contests and will look to continue that impressive stretch against a Baltimore team still searching for offensive consistency.
Despite the team’s recent success, one notable storyline remains the struggles of veteran third baseman Alex Bregman.
Since the beginning of June, Bregman has not produced at the level many expected when the Cubs added him to strengthen the middle of the batting order. While his numbers have dipped over the past month, there are signs that he may be beginning to turn the corner.
During Sunday’s victory over St. Louis, Bregman contributed a key RBI double, providing an encouraging glimpse that his swing may finally be coming around.
Manager Craig Counsell remains fully confident that the veteran slugger will rediscover his elite form during the second half of the season.
Counsell emphasized that Bregman is simply too talented to remain in an extended slump and expressed optimism that the experienced infielder will become a major contributor over the club’s remaining games.
If Bregman returns to his expected level of production, Chicago’s already dangerous lineup could become even more formidable as the playoff race intensifies.
Meanwhile, the Orioles enter the series hoping to rediscover an offense that has struggled to generate consistent run production in recent weeks.
Baltimore saw its three-game winning streak come to an end Sunday with a narrow 3-2 loss to the Cincinnati Reds, continuing a frustrating offensive trend that has limited the club’s ability to capitalize on strong pitching performances.
Over their last nine games, the Orioles have scored more than four runs only twice, a statistic that illustrates the challenges facing the lineup. During that stretch, Baltimore has posted a 4-5 record despite receiving several quality performances from its pitching staff.
Manager Craig Albernaz has continued to defend his hitters, pointing to the overall quality of their at-bats rather than simply focusing on the final results.
Albernaz acknowledged that every team would prefer to score large numbers of runs each night but emphasized that consistently producing offense at the major league level is never easy given the quality of opposing pitching.

Historically, Boyd has experienced mixed success against Baltimore. Across six career starts versus the Orioles, he owns a 1-1 record and a 4.83 ERA over 31⅔ innings pitched.
The Orioles will counter with right-hander Shane Baz, who enters with a 4-8 record and a respectable 4.19 ERA.
Although Baz has not recorded a victory over his last three starts, he continues to pitch effectively. His latest outing against the Chicago White Sox featured seven strong innings in which he surrendered only two runs, earning a no-decision despite one of his better performances of the season.
That appearance also marked an important personal milestone, pushing Baz beyond the 100-inning mark for only the second time during his major league career—a positive sign for the young pitcher as he continues to establish himself as a reliable member of Baltimore’s rotation.
Baz has limited experience facing the Cubs.
His lone career appearance against Chicago came while pitching for the Tampa Bay Rays in 2025, when the Cubs tagged him for five runs in just 2⅓ innings.
Beyond the pitching matchup, Baltimore continues to receive excellent defensive play from center fielder Colton Cowser.
Cowser has become one of the club’s most dependable defenders, using his athleticism, instincts, and body control to patrol center field effectively. His ability to read balls off the bat, execute difficult slides, and cover significant ground has helped stabilize Baltimore’s outfield defense throughout the season.
Manager Craig Albernaz praised Cowser’s defensive awareness and credited him with anchoring the Orioles’ outfield while consistently making difficult plays appear routine.
Despite those defensive contributions, Baltimore has struggled to capitalize on home-field advantage.
