After enduring months of inconsistent offensive production from veteran shortstop Dansby Swanson, the Chicago Cubs may finally have an opportunity to capitalize on his recent resurgence as the MLB trade deadline approaches.
Swanson has shown encouraging signs of returning to form over the past two weeks, sparking speculation that the Cubs could explore the possibility of moving his sizable contract while his value is on the rise.
The former All-Star has been one of Chicago’s hottest hitters since the end of June. He finished the month with five hits over his final two games before carrying that momentum into July, going 6-for-18 during the opening week of the month. The improved production has offered optimism after a lengthy stretch in which he struggled to make a consistent impact at the plate.
Despite the recent turnaround, questions remain about Swanson’s long-term future in Chicago.
The Cubs signed the veteran shortstop to a lucrative long-term contract with expectations that he would become a cornerstone of the franchise both offensively and defensively. While his defensive play has largely remained dependable, his offensive inconsistency has prevented him from living up to the expectations attached to the deal.
As a result, some around baseball believe Chicago should at least gauge the trade market while Swanson is playing his best baseball of the season.
Although moving the contract would be difficult, the current hot streak could be the ideal time to determine whether another club is willing to take a chance on the veteran infielder.
One organization that has emerged as a potential fit is the Atlanta Braves, Swanson’s former team. Atlanta has dealt with instability at shortstop throughout the 2026 campaign, cycling through multiple starters at the position, and a reunion with the former first overall pick could provide an experienced solution.
However, any potential deal would likely be complicated by the financial commitment remaining on Swanson’s contract. Chicago may have to absorb part of the salary, include additional assets, or accept another undesirable contract in return to complete a trade.
Even so, creating long-term payroll flexibility could prove valuable for a Cubs front office seeking to strengthen multiple areas of the roster in future seasons.
The organization is expected to remain active ahead of the trade deadline as it evaluates both short-term playoff ambitions and long-term financial planning.
Ironically, Swanson’s recent offensive surge has also coincided with a dramatic turnaround for the Cubs.
Chicago enters the second half of the season riding a five-game winning streak that has significantly revived its National League Central hopes. The club’s recent success has narrowed the gap in the division standings, transforming what once appeared to be a fading postseason bid into a realistic chase.
The Cubs’ offensive explosion against the San Diego Padres highlighted just how impactful Swanson can be when he is swinging the bat well. During the series, he erupted for three home runs, scored four runs, and drove in eight RBIs, playing a central role in Chicago’s dominant performance.
That production has helped silence criticism surrounding his difficult first half and reminded the organization why it invested heavily in him during free agency.
Still, the Cubs face a difficult decision.
If Swanson continues producing at a high level, he could become an important contributor in Chicago’s push for the postseason. On the other hand, his improved performance may also represent the franchise’s best opportunity to move a contract that many believe has become a financial burden.
With several weeks remaining before the trade deadline, the Cubs are expected to evaluate every possible scenario. Whether they ultimately keep Swanson or explore a blockbuster deal, his recent resurgence has given the front office far more options than it had just a few weeks ago, while also helping breathe new life into Chicago’s playoff aspirations.
