The Miami Marlins have been dealt an untimely setback after placing starting outfielder Owen Caissie on the 10-day injured list with a right calf strain, temporarily sidelining one of the club’s emerging contributors during a crucial stretch of the season.
The injury comes at a difficult time for Miami, which has been one of the hottest teams in Major League Baseball over the past month. The Marlins have surged back into the National League playoff race, making Caissie’s absence another obstacle as they continue their push toward postseason contention.
The club announced Thursday that Caissie suffered the injury after experiencing tightness in his right calf during Wednesday’s game, forcing him to leave the contest early. Medical evaluations later confirmed the strain, prompting the Marlins to place him on the injured list. He is expected to remain out through at least the All-Star break while recovering.
To fill the vacancy on the active roster, the Marlins recalled outfielder Rece Hinds from Triple-A Jacksonville. Hinds will provide additional depth in the outfield as Miami adjusts its lineup during Caissie’s absence.
The injury interrupts what has been a promising first season in Miami for the 24-year-old outfielder. Acquired from the Chicago Cubs during the offseason in the trade that sent right-handed pitcher Edward Cabrera to Chicago, Caissie has quickly become a regular in the Marlins’ lineup.
Through 80 games, he has batted .239 with a .297 on-base percentage and a .459 slugging percentage, while contributing 12 home runs, 50 RBIs and a .755 OPS. His power production has made him a valuable middle-of-the-order option despite ongoing concerns about his strikeout rate.
One of the biggest challenges in Caissie’s game this season has been his tendency to swing and miss. He has struck out in 39 percent of his plate appearances, one of the highest rates among qualified hitters, but his ability to drive the ball for extra-base hits has helped offset some of those struggles.
Despite the strikeouts, Caissie has played an important role in Miami’s remarkable turnaround.
Just over a month ago, the Marlins appeared to be fading from postseason contention. On June 7, the club held a 31-35 record and trailed the Atlanta Braves by 14 games in the National League East.
Since then, Miami has caught fire, compiling an impressive run that has improved its record to 51-42 and reduced the division deficit to just three games. The dramatic climb has transformed the Marlins from fringe contenders into legitimate challengers in both the NL East and the National League Wild Card race.
Caissie’s recent offensive contributions have been part of that resurgence, making his injury particularly disappointing as the club looks to maintain its momentum heading into the second half of the season.
While the Marlins remain optimistic that the injury is not a long-term concern, they will now rely on Rece Hinds and the rest of the roster to help fill the offensive void until Caissie returns.
Miami hopes the former Cubs top prospect will recover quickly and rejoin the lineup shortly after the All-Star break as the team continues its pursuit of a postseason berth.
