Firefighters in Hutchinson, Kansas, carried out an unusual animal rescue this week after saving three ducklings that became trapped inside a deep storm drain at the Kansas State Fairgrounds before safely reuniting them with their mother later the same day.
According to the Hutchinson Fire Department, the rescue operation began Tuesday morning when a man walking his dogs through the fairgrounds noticed one of the ducklings had fallen into a storm drain near the White House building. Concerned for the bird’s safety, he contacted emergency responders for assistance.
Firefighters quickly arrived at the scene and assessed the situation. Because of the depth of the drain, one firefighter was carefully lowered into the underground drainage system to search for the stranded duckling.
During the rescue, crews discovered that the situation was even more challenging than initially believed. While retrieving the first duckling, firefighters spotted two additional ducklings farther down the storm drain, prompting them to reposition their equipment and expand the rescue effort.
Working together, the firefighters successfully reached all three ducklings and carefully lifted them to safety, ensuring none of the birds were injured during the operation.
After the rescue, the ducklings were taken back to the fire station, where firefighters cleaned and cared for them. The birds were given baths using Dawn dish soap to remove contaminants and residue they had picked up while trapped inside the storm drainage system, helping ensure they were healthy before being released.
Later that afternoon, at approximately noon, firefighters searched the surrounding area for the ducklings’ mother. They eventually located the adult duck near Lake Talbott, close to the fairgrounds, where the three rescued ducklings were safely reunited with her.
The heartwarming reunion marked a successful conclusion to the rescue effort, with all three ducklings returning safely to the wild alongside their mother.
Adding a touch of humor to the story, firefighters affectionately nicknamed the rescued birds Mo, Curly, and Larry, a playful reference to the classic comedy trio The Three Stooges.
The Hutchinson Fire Department also shared a lighthearted public message following the rescue, jokingly advising the area’s “duck community” to stay away from storm drains because they are much deeper than they appear.
While emphasizing that firefighters are always ready to respond to emergencies whether involving people or wildlife the department humorously encouraged ducks to keep “all webbed feet on safe ground.”
The successful rescue highlighted not only the department’s commitment to public safety but also its willingness to assist animals in distress, earning praise from members of the community for going the extra mile to save the stranded ducklings.
