Duke head coach Jon Scheyer has already built a reputation as one of college basketball’s premier developers of elite frontcourt talent, and that track record is fueling optimism that highly touted freshman Cameron Williams could become the next star to flourish in Durham.
Williams, one of the top prospects in the 2026 recruiting class, arrives at Duke facing lofty expectations after committing to the Blue Devils as the projected successor to former standout Cameron Boozer, who recently left for the NBA after being selected with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft.
Although Williams enters college with a different playing style than Boozer and former Duke sensation Cooper Flagg, many believe his combination of size, athleticism and offensive versatility gives him one of the highest ceilings among incoming freshmen.
According to ESPN recruiting analyst Jeff Borzello, Williams possesses rare long-term potential thanks to his 6-foot-11 frame and rapidly developing all-around offensive game.
Borzello noted that Williams has significantly expanded his skill set throughout the recruiting process, particularly by developing into a reliable three-point shooter. While Duke’s roster will undergo major changes following the departures of several NBA-caliber players, he expects Williams to immediately step into the power forward role vacated by Boozer.
Despite those expectations, Borzello emphasized that Williams is not expected to mirror the playing styles of either Boozer or Flagg.
Unlike Boozer, whose all-around game made him one of the nation’s highest-usage players, or Flagg, whose versatility helped make him the No. 1 overall pick in the NBA Draft, Williams projects as a balanced two-way contributor capable of impacting games through efficient scoring, perimeter shooting and defensive versatility rather than dominating every possession.
While Williams may not arrive with the same national acclaim as his predecessors, his physical tools and untapped upside have many believing he could become Scheyer’s next major developmental success.
That confidence is rooted largely in Scheyer’s recent accomplishments.
Since taking over Duke’s program, Scheyer has guided multiple elite recruits into NBA lottery selections, most notably Flagg and Boozer. Both players significantly elevated their draft stock during their time under Scheyer’s coaching, reinforcing Duke’s reputation as one of college basketball’s premier destinations for elite frontcourt prospects.
Williams now enters a program with a proven history of maximizing five-star talent.
Although Scheyer has become increasingly active in the transfer portal adding experienced contributors such as John Blackwell and Drew Scharnowski his recruiting philosophy continues to revolve around developing elite high school prospects into professional players.
That approach reportedly played a major role in Williams choosing Duke over numerous other national powers.
The highly recruited forward is said to have trusted Scheyer’s long-term vision for his development, believing the Blue Devils provide the best environment to refine his game and prepare for an eventual NBA career.
The timing may also work in Williams’ favor.
Unlike last season, when Duke’s limited depth became a concern during its NCAA Tournament run, the Blue Devils are expected to field a deeper and more balanced roster in 2026-27.
That added depth should allow Scheyer to gradually increase Williams’ responsibilities rather than relying on him immediately as the focal point of the offense. The coaching staff is expected to carefully manage his minutes early in the season while helping him adjust to the speed and physicality of the college game.
The strategy mirrors the developmental path Scheyer has successfully used with previous five-star recruits, allowing young players to grow into larger roles as the season progresses.
By the time March arrives, many around the program expect Williams to be operating at a significantly higher level than when the season begins.
Scheyer’s growing reputation as a coach capable of preparing elite forwards for NBA success continues to strengthen Duke’s appeal on the recruiting trail. With stars such as Flagg and Boozer already following that path, Williams now has the opportunity to become the latest Blue Devil to develop into a future professional under Scheyer’s guidance.
As Duke begins another season with championship aspirations, the program believes Williams has all the tools to become its next standout frontcourt player and Scheyer’s proven ability to develop elite talent is one of the biggest reasons expectations remain so high.
