Duke head coach Jon Scheyer remains committed to leading the Blue Devils, but growing interest from the NBA has fueled fresh speculation that his future in Durham may eventually include a move to the professional ranks.
Although Scheyer chose to remain at Duke this offseason despite reported interest from the Dallas Mavericks, many basketball observers believe it may only be a matter of time before one of college basketball’s brightest young coaches receives another opportunity to coach in the NBA.
The Mavericks reportedly viewed Scheyer as one of their top candidates after parting ways with former head coach Jason Kidd. The potential job carried additional intrigue because it would have reunited Scheyer with former Duke superstar Cooper Flagg, who has already emerged as one of the NBA’s brightest young players after earning Rookie of the Year honors following his selection as the No. 1 overall pick.
Despite the appeal of coaching one of his former players at the professional level, Scheyer ultimately decided to remain at Duke, where he continues pursuing the one accomplishment still missing from his résumé a national championship as the Blue Devils’ head coach.
The decision was widely praised throughout college basketball, but it has done little to quiet predictions that Scheyer will eventually make the leap to the NBA.
Among those who believe an NBA move is inevitable is league insider Shams Charania, who previously suggested Scheyer is likely to coach professionally at some point after the Mavericks hired Dusty May instead.
CBS Sports college basketball writer Cameron Salerno shares that view, recently predicting Scheyer will become the next prominent NCAA head coach to transition to the NBA.
However, Salerno believes the timing of that move will depend largely on whether Scheyer first delivers Duke its first national championship since the retirement of legendary coach Mike Krzyzewski.
According to Salerno, Duke enters the upcoming season with one of the deepest and most talented rosters in college basketball, positioning the Blue Devils as legitimate national title contenders once again.
He described Scheyer as one of the sport’s premier talent evaluators and roster builders, noting that the coach has consistently assembled elite recruiting classes while supplementing the roster through the transfer portal.
If Duke captures the NCAA championship, Salerno believes Scheyer’s coaching legacy at his alma mater would be firmly established, making an eventual NBA opportunity significantly more attractive.
Winning a national title would also complete Scheyer’s journey from championship-winning Duke player to championship-winning Duke head coach, strengthening his standing among the program’s most accomplished figures.
For Duke supporters, that scenario presents a difficult tradeoff.
While losing Scheyer would be a major blow to one of college basketball’s premier programs, many fans would likely view his departure differently if it came after ending the Blue Devils’ championship drought and delivering the program’s first NCAA title of the post-Krzyzewski era.
Scheyer’s competitive nature has long made him an intriguing NBA coaching candidate.
Although his professional playing career never reached the heights of his collegiate success, his basketball knowledge, player development skills and recruiting ability have earned widespread respect throughout coaching circles, making him an increasingly attractive option for NBA franchises seeking young, innovative leadership.
For now, however, Scheyer appears fully focused on Duke.
The Blue Devils are expected to enter the upcoming season among the favorites to compete for the national championship, and the coach has repeatedly emphasized his commitment to bringing another title back to Cameron Indoor Stadium before considering any future opportunities.
As NBA interest continues to grow, speculation surrounding Scheyer’s long-term future is unlikely to disappear. But unless the right professional opportunity emerges after Duke reaches the top of college basketball, the Blue Devils’ head coach appears determined to finish the mission he started in Durham.
