The Philadelphia Phillies are expected to remain active ahead of Major League Baseball’s Aug. 3 trade deadline, and one potential target emerging in trade speculation is San Francisco Giants third baseman Matt Chapman.
After a disastrous 9-19 start to the season, Philadelphia has dramatically turned its campaign around following the managerial change from Rob Thomson to Don Mattingly. The club has surged back into contention and is now closing the gap on the Atlanta Braves in the National League East race. Despite the resurgence, many believe the Phillies still need another impact bat and defensive upgrade if they hope to secure the division title and make a serious World Series run.

With the San Francisco Giants struggling near the bottom of the National League West standings, they are widely viewed as potential sellers before the trade deadline. That has placed several veterans, including Chapman, at the center of trade discussions.
In a recent ESPN analysis of players who could be moved before the deadline, MLB insiders Kiley McDaniel and Jeff Passan identified Chapman as a strong fit for Philadelphia. The analysts highlighted the veteran infielder’s long-standing value on both sides of the ball despite a decline in some offensive metrics.
According to ESPN, Chapman has remained an above-average contributor offensively and defensively for the better part of a decade. While his underlying bat speed has actually improved compared to previous seasons, advanced hitting metrics such as barrel rate and hard-contact indicators have dipped, suggesting that mechanical adjustments could help unlock more of his power.
The 33-year-old has appeared in 84 games this season, producing seven home runs and 42 RBIs. Although his batting average has remained modest—consistent with much of his career—Chapman continues to provide reliable power, veteran leadership and elite defense at third base.
ClutchPoints’ Garrett Kerman also argued that acquiring Chapman would represent an aggressive “win-now” move for Philadelphia. He noted that the veteran would immediately strengthen the Phillies’ infield defense, an area that has occasionally been exposed this season, while adding valuable postseason experience to a clubhouse with championship aspirations.
Chapman has reached the MLB playoffs four times during his career, twice with the Oakland Athletics and twice with the Toronto Blue Jays. He is also one of baseball’s premier defensive third basemen, having captured five Gold Glove Awards, including his most recent honor in 2024.
However, any deal would come with financial considerations. Chapman remains under contract for four additional seasons beyond 2026 and is owed just over $100 million, a commitment that could make Philadelphia hesitant, particularly amid uncertainty surrounding MLB’s labor landscape and the possibility of salary cap discussions during the expected collective bargaining negotiations in 2027.
Even with the financial hurdles, Chapman remains one of the more intriguing trade candidates available, and if the Giants choose to sell, the Phillies could emerge as a serious suitor in their pursuit of another deep postseason run.
