Joaquim Boumtje-Boumtje has yet to play a game for Duke, but the highly regarded five-star recruit has already embraced one of college basketball’s fiercest rivalries.
The Blue Devils’ incoming freshman recently explained why he committed to Duke during a podcast appearance, and while discussing his recruiting process, he unexpectedly referenced longtime rival North Carolina, adding another chapter to one of the sport’s most heated competitions before even stepping onto the court.
Duke stood above every other program
Boumtje-Boumtje, one of Duke’s marquee additions in the 2026 recruiting class, said he considered several top programs during his recruitment. However, he ultimately felt that passing on Duke would have left him wondering what might have been.
“I liked a lot of the schools that offered me,” Boumtje-Boumtje said. “But at the end of the day, I felt like if I chose one of those schools, I’d be missing out on Duke.”
Then came the comment that immediately caught the attention of college basketball fans.
The five-star prospect specifically mentioned North Carolina as an example, saying he never felt like he would be missing out on the Tar Heels in the same way.
“I didn’t feel that way about the other schools,” he explained. “I didn’t feel like I’d be missing out on going to UNC. It would’ve been great, but I felt like I would’ve been missing out on Duke if I had gone to UNC.”
Rivalry already heating up
While Boumtje-Boumtje’s comments were intended to highlight what made Duke stand out during his recruitment, many fans quickly interpreted them as an early jab at the Blue Devils’ biggest rival.
The Duke–North Carolina rivalry is among the most celebrated in college sports, and even seemingly harmless remarks often generate strong reactions from both fan bases.
Although the freshman never directly criticized the Tar Heels’ program, his decision to single out UNC rather than speaking generally about his recruitment immediately fueled debate across social media.
Fans react to bold comments
Supporters of both schools wasted little time weighing in.
Many Duke fans appreciated the confidence and viewed the comments as proof that Boumtje-Boumtje already understands the significance of the rivalry.
North Carolina fans, meanwhile, were quick to dismiss the remarks, suggesting the freshman should wait until he has proven himself on the court before taking verbal shots at the Tar Heels.
Others viewed the comments as relatively harmless, arguing that UNC simply happened to be the first school that came to mind while discussing his recruiting decision.
Pressure now follows the freshman
Whether intentional or not, Boumtje-Boumtje has ensured that his first matchup against North Carolina will receive even more attention.
Highly ranked recruits often enter Durham carrying lofty expectations, and now the five-star newcomer will also face increased scrutiny whenever Duke meets its Tobacco Road rival.
If the Blue Devils dominate the rivalry during his career, the comments could become a memorable footnote celebrating his confidence.
If North Carolina gets the better of Duke, however, Tar Heels fans are almost certain to revisit the interview and remind the freshman of his offseason remarks.
For now, Boumtje-Boumtje has made one thing clear: before playing his first collegiate game, he already believes Duke was the only destination that truly felt like home—and he wasn’t afraid to say so.
