Florida State head coach Mike Norvell voiced strong confidence in new starting quarterback Ashton Daniels during the 2026 ACC Media Days, highlighting the veteran signal-caller’s resilience while referencing the difficult circumstances he faced during previous stops at Stanford and Auburn.
Daniels enters his fifth collegiate season with the Seminoles after transferring to Tallahassee, where he is expected to lead an offense that could determine the direction of Florida State’s 2026 campaign. The season also carries significant pressure for Norvell, whose future has become a major topic of discussion following consecutive disappointing seasons.
Although Norvell dismissed suggestions that he is coaching to save his job, he emphasized that Daniels has already overcome numerous obstacles throughout his college career, describing his previous experiences as situations he had to “work through.”
“He’s a guy that can really do it all,” Norvell said during ACC Media Days. “Ashton’s had a great deal of experience around his college career. He’s been put in a lot of different situations that he’s had to work through.”
While Norvell did not directly criticize Daniels’ former programs, his remarks appeared to reference the instability and challenges the quarterback encountered during his time at both Stanford and Auburn.
Daniels spent three seasons at Stanford, where he often operated behind an inconsistent offensive line and within an offense that struggled to establish a reliable running game. During his tenure with the Cardinal, the program endured difficult seasons while navigating coaching changes and competing in a highly competitive Pac-12 Conference before the league’s eventual breakup.
Stanford’s offensive shortcomings frequently placed the burden on Daniels to carry the offense. The Cardinal rarely produced a consistent rushing attack, forcing the quarterback to shoulder much of the team’s offensive production while facing relentless defensive pressure.
Despite flashes of talent, Daniels was unable to elevate Stanford into conference contention as the program struggled through one of the most challenging periods in its recent history.
Seeking a fresh start, Daniels transferred to Auburn ahead of the 2025 season, but his opportunities with the Tigers proved limited.
Former Auburn starter Jackson Arnold opened the season as the team’s primary quarterback despite inconsistent performances throughout Southeastern Conference play. Even as Arnold struggled to maintain consistency, Daniels spent much of the season waiting for an extended opportunity.
When Daniels finally received meaningful playing time, he demonstrated the playmaking ability that had made him an attractive transfer addition.
His most memorable performance came in an overtime loss to Vanderbilt, where he accounted for 442 total yards of offense and four touchdowns, delivering one of Auburn’s best quarterback performances of the season despite the Tigers falling 45-38.
That outing led many observers to question whether Auburn should have turned to Daniels earlier in the year.
Ultimately, Daniels never secured the full-time starting role before Auburn underwent additional coaching changes. With new head coach Alex Golesh expected to reshape the roster and implement his own offensive vision, Daniels once again entered the transfer portal in search of a better opportunity.
Florida State now offers Daniels a chance to reset his career while providing the Seminoles with an experienced quarterback capable of leading the offense immediately.
Norvell’s confidence in Daniels extends beyond his athletic ability. The veteran coach believes the quarterback’s experience overcoming adversity has prepared him for the expectations that come with leading one of college football’s most recognizable programs.
The partnership also represents a pivotal moment for Norvell.
Following two disappointing seasons, the Florida State coach has assumed a greater role in directing the offense after longtime offensive strategist Gus Malzahn stepped away. That places increased responsibility on Norvell to maximize Daniels’ potential while helping return the Seminoles to ACC title contention.
For Daniels, the move to Tallahassee represents another opportunity to prove he can thrive in a stable environment after navigating difficult circumstances at both Stanford and Auburn.
