The New York Mets opened the second half of the 2026 Major League Baseball season on a winning note Thursday night, defeating the Philadelphia Phillies 4-1 at Citizens Bank Park behind a dominant performance from catcher Francisco Alvarez, who launched two home runs to snap his club’s three-game losing streak.
Playing in the first MLB game at Citizens Bank Park following the 2026 All-Star Game, Alvarez delivered one of his best performances of the season, accounting for half of New York’s runs while helping the Mets earn an important victory over a Phillies team battling for playoff positioning.
Alvarez Delivers Career-Like Power Display
Alvarez continued his recent offensive resurgence by blasting his 10th and 11th home runs of the season, both coming against Philadelphia ace Aaron Nola.
His first homer came in the top of the third inning when he crushed a 416-foot solo shot on a 1-2 slider, giving the Mets an early 1-0 advantage.
The 24-year-old catcher struck again in the seventh inning after teammate Brett Baty had already extended the lead with a solo home run. Alvarez followed immediately with another towering blast, sending a 363-foot drive over the wall to put New York firmly in control.
The two-homer performance highlighted Alvarez’s impressive power from the bottom of the batting order and reinforced his value as one of the Mets’ most dangerous offensive threats.
Manager Praises Complete Performance
Interim manager Andy Green praised Alvarez not only for his offense but also for his work behind the plate.
Green noted that Alvarez expertly guided New York’s pitching staff throughout the game while providing uncommon offensive production from the No. 9 spot in the lineup.
The manager suggested Alvarez’s growing offensive consistency may soon warrant a move higher in the batting order, emphasizing that few teams possess that level of power from the ninth position.
Christian Scott Shines on the Mound
While Alvarez supplied the offense, rookie right-hander Christian Scott anchored the victory with another outstanding pitching performance.
Scott limited Philadelphia to just three hits over 5⅔ scoreless innings while improving to 3-1 on the season. He consistently kept Phillies hitters off balance and escaped several scoring opportunities before handing the game over to the bullpen.
His strong outing continued an encouraging season that has made him an increasingly important piece of New York’s starting rotation.
Soto Reaches Base Four Times
Star outfielder Juan Soto also played a major role in the victory despite not recording an extra-base hit.
Soto reached base four times, collecting one single and drawing three walks while constantly applying pressure to Philadelphia’s pitching staff.
He exited the game during the eighth inning because of calf soreness, but the Mets indicated the issue is considered minor and he is not expected to miss additional playing time.
Baty and Ewing Add Insurance
The Mets received additional offensive contributions from Brett Baty, who launched a solo home run in the seventh inning to double New York’s lead before Alvarez’s second homer.
Outfielder A.J. Ewing later added an RBI double in the ninth inning, providing valuable insurance with the game’s final run.
Philadelphia avoided the shutout in the eighth inning when shortstop Trea Turner connected for a solo home run, but the Phillies were unable to generate any further offense against the Mets’ pitching staff.
