The St. Louis Cardinals have become one of Major League Baseball’s biggest surprises during the 2026 season, but their unexpected success has also created one of the most difficult decisions facing the organization ahead of the July 31 trade deadline.
After entering the year widely expected to begin a lengthy rebuilding process, the Cardinals instead find themselves firmly in the National League playoff race. St. Louis carries a 50-45 record into the second half of the season and sits just one game behind the final National League Wild Card spot, putting the front office in a delicate position as the deadline approaches.
Rather than bottoming out after trading away several veteran stars during the offseason, the Cardinals have exceeded expectations behind one of the youngest rosters in baseball. President of baseball operations Chaim Bloom’s commitment to developing young talent has produced immediate results, accelerating what many believed would be a long-term rebuild.
Several young players have emerged as key contributors.
Outfielder Jordan Walker has enjoyed a breakout campaign, earning the first All-Star selection of his career, while catcher Iván Herrera and reliever Riley O’Brien also represented St. Louis at the Midsummer Classic.
The organization also demonstrated its long-term commitment to rising star JJ Wetherholt, signing the 23-year-old second baseman to an eight-year, $112.5 million contract extension. Wetherholt has become the frontrunner for the National League Rookie of the Year Award after an outstanding first season in the majors.
Buyers or Sellers? Cardinals Still Weighing Their Options
Despite their surprising first-half performance, the Cardinals have not yet committed to buying at the trade deadline.
With several weeks remaining before the deadline, a poor stretch of games could quickly change the club’s direction, forcing the front office to consider moving veteran players for additional prospects as part of its long-term plan.
Among the players generating the most trade speculation is veteran outfielder Lars Nootbaar.
According to MLB.com’s Will Leitch, Nootbaar may be the Cardinals’ most valuable trade asset if the organization decides to capitalize on his value before the deadline.
Nootbaar Could Draw Strong Interest Across the League
Leitch believes Nootbaar’s combination of versatility, offensive potential, and remaining team control makes him an attractive target for postseason contenders seeking lineup upgrades.
The 28-year-old has battled injuries throughout his career but appears healthier than he has been in several seasons. He has even returned to playing center field, increasing his value by demonstrating defensive flexibility across the outfield.
“Nootbaar looks healthier than he has in years,” Leitch wrote. “His underlying metrics have consistently suggested more offensive production than his traditional numbers show, making him the type of player another organization may believe it can unlock.”
Nootbaar opened the season on the 60-day injured list, delaying his debut until June 5, but he has performed well since returning.
Through 32 games, he owns a .260 batting average, .355 on-base percentage, and .423 slugging percentage, while contributing three home runs and 12 RBIs. His ability to get on base and play multiple outfield positions could make him an appealing addition for clubs pursuing a playoff berth.
Team Control Adds to His Value
Another factor increasing Nootbaar’s trade value is his contract status.
He remains under club control through the 2027 season, with one remaining year of arbitration eligibility before reaching free agency. That additional year gives acquiring teams more than just a short-term rental, potentially driving up the asking price should the Cardinals decide to move him.
While reliever Riley O’Brien could also attract significant interest from contenders seeking bullpen help, Nootbaar’s everyday role, offensive upside, and defensive versatility may allow St. Louis to command a stronger return in any potential deal.
Deadline Will Shape Cardinals’ Future
The Cardinals now face one of the most important decisions of Chaim Bloom’s tenure.
If the club continues winning and remains firmly in the playoff race, St. Louis could choose to add talent and pursue an unexpected postseason appearance.
However, if the Cardinals stumble over the opening weeks of the second half, Bloom may instead seize the opportunity to maximize the value of veterans like Nootbaar and continue strengthening one of baseball’s rapidly improving farm systems.
