Just In: Cardinals Strike Gold with Below-Slot First-Round Signing

The St. Louis Cardinals have officially locked up one of the top talents from the 2026 MLB Draft, reaching an agreement with first-round selection Trevor Condon on a contract that could prove to be one of the organization’s biggest wins of the summer.

The Cardinals have agreed to terms with first-round pick (No. 13 overall) Trevor Condon, for $5,161,300 (slot value = $5,660,000), per @JimCallisMLB. Here are the top picks who have agreed to terms

According to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Cardinals signed the 13th overall pick to a deal that includes a $5.16 million signing bonus, a figure that comes in well below the assigned slot value for his draft position.

The agreement not only secures one of the franchise’s top young prospects but also gives the Cardinals valuable financial flexibility as they continue signing the remainder of their 2026 draft class.

Cardinals Save Bonus Pool Money

Major League Baseball assigned the No. 13 overall selection a slot value of $5,661,300, according to MLB Pipeline’s Jim Callis. By signing Condon for approximately $500,000 below slot, St. Louis preserves a significant portion of its draft bonus pool.

That savings could become extremely valuable as the Cardinals work to sign other highly regarded selections, including prep shortstop Rocco Maniscalco, who may require an above-slot bonus to forgo his college commitment.

For a front office focused on maximizing every draft dollar, Condon’s willingness to sign below slot represents an important strategic victory.

Condon Chooses Pro Baseball Over Tennessee

Before hearing his name called in the first round, Condon had been committed to play college baseball at the University of Tennessee, one of the nation’s premier baseball programs.

However, shortly after being drafted, the Georgia native made it clear that he intended to begin his professional career rather than head to college.

The standout center fielder from Etowah High School in Woodstock, Georgia, helped lead his team to a state championship and quickly emerged as one of the most athletic prospects in this year’s draft class.

The Cardinals officially announced the signing Thursday by sharing photos of Condon putting pen to paper on his first professional contract.

Elite Athleticism Headlines Condon’s Skill Set

While Condon may still need time to develop physically, scouts believe his athletic ability gives him one of the highest ceilings among players selected in this year’s draft.

According to MLB Pipeline’s scouting report, the 18-year-old owns a polished 60-grade hit tool, highlighting his advanced ability to make consistent contact with a smooth, left-handed swing.

For comparison, Cardinals rookie standout JJ Wetherholt currently considered one of the favorites for the National League Rookie of the Year Award received a 65-grade hit tool as a prospect.

Condon’s greatest strength, however, is his speed.

He possesses 70-grade speed, placing him among the fastest players in the entire 2026 draft class. His elite quickness allows him to impact games both on the bases and defensively, where scouts have also awarded him a 60-grade fielding tool.

Although his power is still developing, evaluators believe Condon projects as the type of player who can consistently get on base, steal bases, cover significant ground in center field and become an impact defender at the major league level.

Long-Term Investment for St. Louis

At just 18 years old, Condon is expected to spend several seasons developing in the Cardinals’ minor league system before reaching St. Louis.

Unless he experiences an unusually rapid rise similar to some of baseball’s fastest-developing prospects, the organization plans to allow him time to refine his offensive game while adding strength and continuing his defensive development.

If everything progresses as expected, the Cardinals believe Condon has the potential to become their everyday center fielder for years to come.

Draft Strategy Already Paying Off

By securing one of the draft’s premier athletes on a below-slot contract, the Cardinals have positioned themselves to strengthen an already impressive draft class while maintaining flexibility to pursue additional high-upside prospects.

The signing represents another step in president of baseball operations Chaim Bloom’s long-term plan of rebuilding the organization’s farm system through smart drafting, player development and financial discipline.

With Condon now officially under contract, the Cardinals can turn their attention toward preparing one of their newest top prospects for the beginning of his professional baseball journey while continuing negotiations with the rest of their 2026 draft class.
