The Philadelphia Phillies received an encouraging boost from one of their brightest young arms immediately after the All-Star break, as top pitching prospect Gage Wood delivered the most dominant outing of his professional career in Double-A.
The Phillies’ No. 2-ranked prospect overwhelmed Altoona hitters on Sunday, recording a career-high nine strikeouts in Double-A Reading’s 10-6 victory at FirstEnergy Stadium. Wood worked four effective innings, allowing just two earned runs on two hits while issuing no walks, with nine of his 12 outs coming via strikeout.
Ranked as MLB Pipeline’s No. 50 overall prospect, the hard-throwing right-hander showcased the electric arsenal that has quickly made him one of baseball’s most promising pitching prospects. His fastball repeatedly reached 97 mph, accounting for six of his nine strikeouts, while his complete four-pitch repertoire kept Altoona’s hitters off balance throughout the outing.
One of Wood’s most impressive moments came in the fourth inning when he struck out the side to close his appearance in dominant fashion. He also got the better of Altoona’s Murf Gray, MLB’s No. 100 overall prospect, adding another highlight to an already impressive performance.
The outing further strengthened Wood’s impressive numbers since his promotion to Double-A. His ERA now sits at 3.58 with 48 strikeouts against only nine walks, underlining both his swing-and-miss ability and outstanding command. Since finding his rhythm in May, Wood has not allowed more than two earned runs in any start, demonstrating remarkable consistency after an early adjustment period.
Widely regarded as the No. 6 right-handed pitching prospect in baseball, Wood has exceeded expectations following his rapid jump from Single-A to Double-A. His ability to consistently attack the strike zone with a powerful four-pitch mix, highlighted by his elite 70-grade fastball, was evident once again as he completed four innings without surrendering a single walk.
Philadelphia selected Wood with the 26th overall pick in the first round of the 2025 MLB Draft. After making only one brief appearance for Single-A Clearwater following the draft—where he struck out five batters over two innings—he has accelerated through the Phillies’ farm system. Across High-A and Double-A this season, the right-hander owns a 3.51 ERA with 88 strikeouts in 59 innings, reinforcing his status as one of the organization’s most valuable pitching prospects.
Wood also represented the Phillies at the 2026 All-Star Futures Game at Citizens Bank Park on July 12. Although he surrendered one earned run in his lone inning, the selection highlighted the growing belief around baseball that he could become an important part of Philadelphia’s future rotation.
Sunday’s dominant performance offered another reminder of Wood’s immense potential and gave the Phillies even more reason to be optimistic about one of the organization’s fastest-rising prospects.
