With the MLB trade deadline quickly approaching, the Philadelphia Phillies are expected to be among the league’s most aggressive buyers as they look to strengthen a roster capable of making another deep postseason run.
President of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski has several needs to address, including adding a right-handed bat, improving the bullpen, and finding more reliable starting pitching depth. Completing multiple upgrades, however, will require valuable trade assets and one intriguing young pitcher is beginning to emerge as a potential piece in those discussions.
Phillies Still Have Multiple Needs to Address
Despite remaining one of the National League’s top contenders, Philadelphia’s roster still has several obvious weaknesses.
Offensively, the club continues searching for a dependable right-handed hitter, preferably an outfielder who can add balance to the lineup and eliminate any possibility of moving Bryce Harper back to the outfield.
The pitching staff also remains a concern.
The bullpen took a significant hit after Brad Keller suffered a season-ending UCL injury, leaving the Phillies searching for dependable arms capable of bridging games to closer Jhoan Duran.
In addition, the back end of the starting rotation has struggled throughout the season, with the team often failing to remain competitive when Aaron Nola or the fifth starter takes the mound.
Those issues have made the trade deadline even more important for Philadelphia’s front office.
Marty Gair Emerging as an Intriguing Trade Asset
While much of the attention has focused on the Phillies’ top-ranked prospects, another young arm is quietly increasing his value in the lower levels of the farm system.
According to Matt Gelb of The Athletic, right-handed reliever Marty Gair has become a player rival organizations could target during trade negotiations.
Selected in the 13th round of the 2023 MLB Draft out of Florida SouthWestern State College, Gair is not currently ranked among Philadelphia’s top 30 prospects.
Even so, his elite velocity and strikeout ability have made him one of the organization’s most intriguing under-the-radar pitching prospects.
Triple-Digit Velocity Turning Heads
Pitching for Single-A Clearwater in the Florida State League, Gair has consistently overwhelmed hitters with one of the hardest fastballs in the minor leagues.
His fastball averages an impressive 97.8 mph and has reportedly reached 101.5 mph, giving him the type of premium velocity that every organization covets.
Through 32 innings, Gair has struck out 56 of the 132 batters he has faced, showcasing his ability to miss bats at an elite rate.
His dominance earned him recognition as the Phillies’ Minor League Pitcher of the Month for June, after posting an extraordinary stretch in which he recorded 18 strikeouts in just 8.2 innings, while opponents managed only one hit in 26 at-bats, good for an incredible .038 batting average.
Command Remains the Biggest Question
While Gair’s raw stuff is undeniably impressive, his command continues to be a work in progress.
He has issued 20 walks this season and owns a career minor league walk rate of 8.2 walks per nine innings, highlighting the biggest obstacle standing between him and a rapid climb through the organization.
Those control issues have contributed to a 5.06 ERA, despite allowing only 18 hits all season.
Five of those hits have left the ballpark as home runs, further illustrating the importance of improving his pitch location and consistency.
Still, scouts often view command as something that can be refined over time, especially when paired with elite arm talent like Gair possesses.
Prospect Could Help Phillies Complete Deadline Deals
Although Gair is unlikely to headline a blockbuster trade package, he could become an important secondary piece in negotiations.
Teams frequently seek high-upside lottery-ticket prospects with elite physical tools, and Gair fits that description perfectly.
His triple-digit fastball, strikeout potential, and athletic upside could make him an appealing addition for organizations confident in their player development systems.
Including a prospect like Gair as the second or third piece in a trade package could help Philadelphia bridge the gap in negotiations and acquire the major league talent needed for another postseason push.
Deadline Decisions Approaching
With several roster holes still needing attention, the Phillies are expected to remain active until the trade deadline passes.
Whether the club lands another bat, bullpen help, or starting pitching, assembling the right prospect package will be critical.
