While the Phillies remain among the National League’s top teams, simply reaching the postseason isn’t the organization’s goal. This is a club built to compete for a championship, and strengthening the roster over the next several days could be the difference between another deep playoff run and another disappointing October exit.
Pitching Remains the Phillies’ Biggest Priority
Much of the conversation surrounding Philadelphia’s deadline strategy has centered on adding pitching. Both the starting rotation and bullpen could use reinforcements, especially with the postseason in mind, where elite pitching often determines who advances.
The challenge, however, is acquiring impact arms without one of baseball’s deepest farm systems. The Phillies don’t possess an abundance of elite prospects, meaning they may have to make difficult decisions if they hope to land premium talent.
One surprising name that could emerge in trade talks isn’t top pitching prospect Gage Wood but rather young outfielder Justin Crawford.

For years, Crawford has been viewed as one of the organization’s brightest young talents. After climbing through the minor league system, the speedy outfielder earned a regular role with the Phillies this season and has shown flashes of the player scouts believe he can become.
Although his rookie campaign has produced mixed results, Crawford still carries considerable value because of his age, athleticism, and long-term upside.
This season, the left-handed hitter is batting .257/.304/.344 with three home runs, 17 RBIs, and 13 stolen bases. While those offensive numbers don’t immediately jump off the page, they don’t tell the entire story of his development.
Triple-A Success Shows His Long-Term Potential
Before arriving in Philadelphia, Crawford was one of the most productive hitters at Triple-A. Last season, he posted an outstanding .334/.411/.452 slash line while stealing 46 bases, demonstrating elite speed and excellent bat-to-ball skills.
His transition to the major leagues hasn’t been seamless, but flashes of that potential have already appeared.
In June, Crawford looked far more comfortable against big-league pitching, batting .307/.333/.360 over the month while showing improved confidence and consistency at the plate. Those improvements suggest his learning curve is beginning to level out.
Speed and Contact Are His Biggest Strengths
Unlike many modern outfielders, Crawford isn’t projected to become a prolific home run hitter. Instead, his game revolves around speed, contact hitting, and creating offense by putting pressure on opposing defenses.
His ability to spray line drives into the gaps, steal bases, and cover plenty of ground defensively gives him significant long-term value, even if he never develops into a middle-of-the-order power bat.
That profile could make him especially attractive to rebuilding clubs looking for controllable young talent.
Trading Crawford Could Help Phillies Land an Impact Player
While Philadelphia’s outfield has been viewed as an area that still needs improvement, the front office could choose a different approach.
Rather than keeping Crawford and searching for expensive pitching through prospects alone, the Phillies could deal the former top prospect as part of a larger package to acquire a frontline starter or high-leverage reliever. They could then replace his roster spot with a more affordable veteran rental for the remainder of the season.
It’s a strategy that would allow Philadelphia to maximize its current championship window while addressing its biggest weaknesses.

Trading Justin Crawford wouldn’t be an easy move given his upside and years of club control. However, championship contenders are often forced to sacrifice talented young players to acquire proven stars capable of making an immediate impact.
If Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski identifies the right deal, Crawford could surprisingly become one of the organization’s most valuable trade assets before the deadline making him one of the least expected, yet most logical, names to watch over the coming days.
