The St. Louis Cardinals finally delivered the kind of offensive performance fans have been waiting for, combining timely hitting, aggressive baserunning, and a brilliant pitching effort to overwhelm the Cincinnati Reds in a convincing 7-0 victory on Saturday night at Busch Stadium.
For much of the season, Cardinals starter Andre Pallante has often found himself pitching well without receiving much offensive support. That wasn’t the case this time. While it took several innings for the bats to fully come alive, St. Louis eventually erupted with a massive sixth inning that put the game completely out of reach.
Cardinals Strike Early but Leave Opportunities Behind
The Cardinals wasted little time putting pressure on Cincinnati’s defense in the opening inning.
Top prospect JJ Wetherholt reached base after Reds shortstop Elly De La Cruz committed an error on a ground ball up the middle. Jordan Walker followed by reaching safely on another ball that De La Cruz couldn’t handle cleanly. Although Walker was credited with a hit because the ball barely cleared the shortstop into shallow left field, the Reds missed another chance to record an out.
With two runners aboard, Alec Burleson lined a single into left field. Wetherholt aggressively raced home on the play, catching Cincinnati off guard and giving St. Louis a quick 1-0 advantage.
However, the Cardinals once again struggled to capitalize on a promising inning. Iván Herrera struck out before Lars Nootbaar grounded into an inning-ending double play, leaving additional runners stranded and preventing an even bigger first-inning rally.
Andre Pallante Delivers Another Masterful Performance
While the offense remained quiet for several innings, Pallante made sure the slim lead was more than enough.
The right-hander dominated Cincinnati’s lineup from the opening pitch, mixing his arsenal effectively and consistently keeping hitters off balance. Through six scoreless innings, Pallante surrendered just two hits while striking out seven batters and issuing only one walk.
Every time the Reds appeared ready to build momentum, Pallante responded with another clutch pitch, continuing one of his sharpest outings of the season and giving the Cardinals exactly the kind of quality start they desperately needed.
Sixth-Inning Offensive Explosion Breaks Game Wide Open
After several innings of missed opportunities, St. Louis finally unleashed the offensive outburst fans had been waiting to see.
The rally began when Wetherholt worked a leadoff walk. Although Jordan Walker was retired on a foul out, the Cardinals immediately shifted into another gear.
Burleson collected his second hit of the night before Herrera ripped a two-run double, bringing both Wetherholt and Burleson across the plate to extend the lead to 3-0.
The Cardinals refused to slow down.
Nootbaar drew a walk, and Masyn Winn followed with a single to right field to load the bases. Bryan Torres then lined an RBI single to make it 4-0 before Blaze Jordan added another clutch base hit, driving home both Nootbaar and Winn for a commanding 6-0 advantage.
St. Louis capped the huge inning when Nathan Church delivered a sacrifice bunt that allowed Torres to score, completing a six-run frame and stretching the lead to 7-0.
It marked one of the Cardinals’ biggest offensive innings in weeks and showcased just how dangerous their lineup can be when multiple hitters contribute throughout the order.
Bullpen Finishes Off the Shutout
With a comfortable lead in hand, the Cardinals turned the game over to Gordon Graceffo, who entered in relief during the eighth inning.
Graceffo breezed through the eighth without allowing Cincinnati to mount any threat. The ninth inning proved more challenging after he issued a leadoff walk to De La Cruz and surrendered a single to Sal Stewart before another walk to JJ Bleday loaded the bases.
Despite the pressure, Graceffo never lost his composure.
He leaned heavily on an effective 88 mph changeup, using it to strike out Eugenio Suárez looking before fooling Tyler Stephenson for another key strikeout. With two outs, Noelvi Marte grounded out to end the game, allowing Graceffo to escape the jam and preserve the Cardinals’ shutout victory.
Cardinals Look to Secure the Series
With the emphatic win, St. Louis will now aim to capture the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Busch Stadium.
The Cardinals are expected to hand the ball to Kyle Leahy, while Cincinnati will counter with left-hander Andrew Abbott. First pitch is scheduled for 1:15 p.m. as St. Louis looks to build on its most complete performance in recent weeks and carry the offensive momentum into the rubber match against its National League Central rival.
