The Philadelphia Phillies have staged one of the most remarkable turnarounds in baseball this season, climbing back into the National League playoff race after a disastrous 9-19 start that led to the dismissal of manager Rob Thomson.
Since Don Mattingly took over as interim manager, Philadelphia has looked like a completely different club, playing winning baseball and reestablishing itself as a legitimate postseason contender. However, with the MLB trade deadline rapidly approaching, the front office knows the roster still has several glaring weaknesses that must be addressed if the team hopes to make a deep October run.
One intriguing solution could come from the Kansas City Royals, a club that appears increasingly likely to become a seller. A single trade between the two teams could allow the Phillies to strengthen multiple areas of their roster at once.
Phillies Still Have Several Holes to Fill
Despite their resurgence, Philadelphia remains far from a complete team.
The offense has struggled to consistently get runners on base, making it difficult to generate scoring opportunities against quality pitching. While adding one bat may not completely solve those issues, another dependable hitter would certainly provide a boost.
The starting rotation is another area demanding attention. The fifth spot has been one of the weakest links all season, and veteran Aaron Nola has not consistently performed at the level expected from a No. 4 starter. As a result, the Phillies have lacked the dependable depth needed to support the top of their rotation.
The bullpen is another concern. Adding at least one experienced reliever—and possibly two—would help stabilize the pitching staff as Philadelphia prepares for a playoff push.
Making improvements in all of those areas won’t be easy, especially considering the Phillies’ farm system isn’t viewed among baseball’s strongest. That reality makes finding a trade partner capable of filling multiple needs especially valuable.
Royals Could Be the Perfect Trade Match
The Kansas City Royals may offer exactly what Philadelphia is searching for.
According to reports, veteran starter Michael Wacha and outfielder Lane Thomas are among the players drawing interest from the Phillies as potential trade targets.
Landing both players in one deal would immediately address two of Philadelphia’s biggest weaknesses.
Wacha has quietly remained one of baseball’s most dependable veteran starters. While he may not headline a rotation, he consistently gives his team quality innings and keeps games under control.
Through 20 starts this season, the veteran right-hander has produced a solid 3.66 ERA while pitching at least six innings in 15 of those outings. His durability and consistency would make him an ideal addition to the back end of Philadelphia’s rotation, providing far more stability than the club has received from its current fifth-starter options.
Even more impressive is Wacha’s long-term consistency. He has now gone five consecutive seasons without posting an ERA higher than 3.86, making him one of the league’s most reliable veteran pitchers.
Lane Thomas Could Strengthen the Lineup
The Phillies have also been linked to Lane Thomas before, and his production this season has only strengthened his appeal.
After an underwhelming stint with the Cleveland Guardians, Thomas has bounced back offensively, posting a 107 OPS+ while once again proving himself to be an above-average hitter.
His greatest value may come against left-handed pitching.
Over the course of his career, Thomas has punished southpaws, compiling an impressive .287 batting average, .359 on-base percentage, and .485 slugging percentage. That type of right-handed production is exactly what Philadelphia’s lineup has lacked and would give Mattingly another dangerous bat capable of balancing the offense.
Bullpen Help Could Also Come From Kansas City
The Royals possess additional pitching options that could interest Philadelphia.
Former Phillies reliever Matt Strahm remains a familiar name despite enduring a difficult season. While his numbers have dipped, a reunion could appeal to a Phillies front office that has already shown interest in bringing back former players. Toronto Blue Jays reliever Jeff Hoffman has also been mentioned as another possible reunion candidate before the deadline.
Kansas City also has left-handed reliever Daniel Lynch IV, who could immediately strengthen Philadelphia’s bullpen. However, given his age and upside, acquiring Lynch would likely require a significantly larger trade package than pursuing Strahm.
Bobby Witt Jr.’s Injury Could Push Royals Toward Selling
Kansas City’s direction at the deadline became even clearer after superstar shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. landed on the injured list for the first time in his major league career.
Already sitting at 43-62 entering play on July 25, the Royals were trending toward becoming sellers. Losing their franchise cornerstone only reinforces that likelihood and could encourage the organization to move veteran players in exchange for future assets.
That scenario presents an opportunity Philadelphia president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski cannot afford to ignore.
One Trade Could Address Multiple Weaknesses
Instead of making separate deals for a starting pitcher, an outfielder, and bullpen help, the Phillies may be able to accomplish much of their deadline work by negotiating with one organization.
Adding Michael Wacha would stabilize the rotation, Lane Thomas would provide another productive right-handed bat, and a reliever such as Matt Strahm or Daniel Lynch IV could further strengthen the bullpen.
For a Phillies team looking to maximize its championship window while preserving its limited prospect capital, a trade with the Royals could prove to be one of the smartest and most efficient moves available before the deadline.
