The St. Louis Cardinals have officially parted ways with veteran right-handed pitcher Scott Blewett, sending the 30-year-old to the Athletics in exchange for cash considerations. The move comes just days after the Cardinals designated Blewett for assignment, signaling that his stint with the organization would be a brief one.
Blewett made only one appearance for St. Louis during the 2026 season. He took the mound in last Tuesday’s 5-1 loss to the Los Angeles Angels, where he worked two innings out of the bullpen. Despite striking out two batters, he also surrendered one hit and issued two walks in his lone outing before the Cardinals decided to clear a roster spot.
The trade gives the Athletics another experienced arm as they continue to evaluate pitching depth for the remainder of the season. Blewett brings versatility, having worked primarily as a reliever while also making a pair of starts during his major league career.
Over parts of five MLB seasons, Blewett has appeared in 44 games, including two starts, compiling a 4-1 record with a 4.10 ERA. Across 74 2/3 innings, he has recorded 63 strikeouts while issuing 34 walks, demonstrating the ability to miss bats despite bouncing between several organizations.
The right-hander has become one of baseball’s more well-traveled pitchers in recent years. Before joining the Cardinals, he spent time with the Kansas City Royals, Minnesota Twins, Baltimore Orioles, and Atlanta Braves, gaining valuable experience in a variety of bullpen roles.
Blewett originally entered professional baseball as a highly regarded prospect after the Kansas City Royals selected him in the second round of the 2014 MLB Draft. While he has yet to establish himself as a permanent fixture in one major league bullpen, his experience and durability continue to make him an appealing depth option for clubs in need of pitching.
For the Cardinals, the move frees up roster flexibility as they continue to shape their pitching staff, while the Athletics hope Blewett can provide reliable innings and veteran depth during the second half of the season.
