Two former Kentucky Wildcats whose college careers ended on disappointing notes are writing a much different story this summer. Archie Goodwin and Kahlil Whitney have become two of the biggest reasons La Familia, Kentucky’s alumni team, is still alive in The Basketball Tournament (TBT), giving Big Blue Nation plenty to celebrate as they chase a championship.
La Familia survived a tense battle on Sunday, defeating Boeheim’s Army 70-66 to advance to the tournament championship game. Although the Wildcats alumni struggled during stretches of the second half particularly at the free-throw line they delivered when it mattered most behind clutch performances from Goodwin and Whitney.
Goodwin turned in his best game of the tournament, putting the team on his back with a spectacular all-around performance. The former Kentucky guard poured in 30 points, including several crucial baskets during the Elam Ending that helped seal the victory after Boeheim’s Army threatened to complete a comeback.
Beyond his scoring, Goodwin filled the stat sheet with six rebounds, five assists, and two steals, showcasing the complete game that once made him one of the nation’s top high school recruits before arriving in Lexington.
His leadership and timely shot-making proved invaluable as La Familia held its composure during the game’s closing moments and punched its ticket to the tournament final.
Goodwin wasn’t the only former Wildcat making a major impact.
Darryl Morsell added another outstanding effort by recording a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds, providing the toughness and rebounding that helped La Familia control key possessions throughout the contest.
Meanwhile, Kahlil Whitney continued the impressive run that has quietly made him one of the tournament’s biggest surprises. While Sunday’s spotlight belonged largely to Goodwin, Whitney has consistently delivered strong performances throughout the event, giving La Familia another dependable contributor on both ends of the floor.
For both Goodwin and Whitney, this tournament has carried extra significance.
Neither player’s college career at Kentucky concluded the way fans or the players themselves had envisioned.
Goodwin’s Wildcats career ended with the disappointment of an NIT appearance, falling well short of the championship expectations that surround the program each season.
Whitney’s tenure was even shorter, as the highly touted freshman departed the Wildcats midway through the season after leaving the team in January, ending what many expected would be a standout collegiate career before it truly began.
Despite those difficult endings, both players have embraced the opportunity to represent Kentucky once again, earning admiration from Big Blue Nation through their effort, resilience, and strong play in the TBT.
Now, they stand just one victory away from completing a remarkable redemption story.
La Familia will play for the TBT championship on Wednesday, taking on the winner of Kansas or Wichita State at Historic Memorial Coliseum. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET, with the title game set to be televised on FS1.
If La Familia captures the championship, Goodwin and Whitney will undoubtedly be remembered as two of the driving forces behind the team’s memorable tournament run, turning past disappointment into a long-awaited celebration for themselves and Kentucky fans alike.
