For the Texas Rangers, Ezequiel Duran has become much more than a useful utility player. He has emerged as one of the most important pieces keeping their season alive, earning a fitting nickname from his teammates: “The Solution.”
What started as a playful comment during winter baseball in the Dominican Republic has turned into an accurate description of Duran’s value. Whenever the Rangers have needed help, whether because of an injury, a lineup change or a defensive adjustment, Duran has consistently stepped forward. His ability to move around the diamond without sacrificing his offensive production has made him nearly indispensable during a season in which Texas has dealt with several key absences.
“It would be a very different season without him,” Rangers starter Nathan Eovaldi said, emphasizing just how much Duran’s versatility has meant to the club.
Duran has started games at six different defensive positions this season while putting together one of the most productive offensive seasons of his career. He is hitting .276 with 13 home runs and a career-best 63 RBIs, a remarkable improvement after he failed to hit a home run in 90 games last season.
His defensive flexibility has become particularly important with the Rangers dealing with injuries to players such as Josh Jung and Corey Seager. Most recently, Duran has settled in as Texas’ everyday third baseman while Jung recovers from a left calf strain.
A Player Who Can Line Up Almost Anywhere
Duran’s versatility is difficult to overlook. He has made 44 starts at shortstop, the most of any position this season, while also making 20 starts at second base and 20 at third. He has even spent time at first base and both corner-outfield positions.
In 23 games, Duran has started at multiple positions, including 13 contests in which he moved between the infield and outfield.
That kind of flexibility gives manager Skip Schumaker an extra weapon when constructing his lineup and making in-game adjustments.
“He nicknamed himself ‘The Solution’ for a reason,” Schumaker said. “And it’s no joke. He has been that the whole year.”
The nickname has become so popular inside the Rangers’ clubhouse that players now wear T-shirts featuring Duran and the words “The Solution.” The story behind it makes the nickname even more fitting.
During winter ball in the Dominican Republic, a teammate jokingly called Duran “the solution” after he played three different positions in the same game. Duran initially paid little attention to the phrase, but the nickname followed him into spring training.
Once the Rangers began testing his defensive limits including drills at catcher it became clear that there were very few places on the field where Duran could not contribute. Although he has not appeared in a game as a catcher, his unusual athletic versatility has already made him one of the club’s most valuable roster pieces.
From the Gallo Trade to a Key Rangers Contributor
Duran’s journey with Texas dates back to one of the franchise’s most notable trades in recent years.
The Rangers acquired him from the New York Yankees in 2021 as part of the multiplayer deal that sent Joey Gallo to New York. Duran had originally joined the Yankees organization shortly after turning 18 in 2017.
He eventually made his major league debut with Texas in 2022 and became an important contributor during the Rangers’ championship run the following year.
Now, several seasons later, Duran has developed into precisely the type of player every postseason contender needs: someone who can fill holes all over the roster while also delivering important offensive moments.
And lately, those moments have come at exactly the right time.
Duran Delivering When Texas Needs Him Most
The Rangers entered a critical stretch of the season fighting to remain within striking distance of the American League West lead. Texas had fallen into a season-worst six-game losing streak, including a damaging sweep at the hands of the Houston Astros.
The Rangers desperately needed someone to help change the momentum.
Duran answered.
In a dramatic victory over San Francisco, he delivered four RBIs, including the game-winning hit in the bottom of the ninth inning. Earlier in the game, his two-run double in the eighth had given Texas a 4-2 advantage before the Giants rallied to tie the score.
With the game once again on the line in the ninth, Duran came through with another RBI double to finish the comeback and give Texas a much-needed 5-4 victory.
His heroics came only one night after he had gone 4-for-4, including a ninth-inning home run that accounted for Texas’ only run in the game.
Those performances have reinforced why the Rangers continue to rely so heavily on him.
“We would not even be where we’re at in the playoff hunt without him,” right fielder Brandon Nimmo said. “He’s been integral to any success that we’ve had.”
The Piece Keeping Texas Afloat
The Rangers entered their latest off day at 57-58, just 1½ games behind Houston in the AL West despite recently enduring their worst losing streak of the season. Their margin for error is shrinking, and every victory matters as they attempt to stay in the postseason race.
That makes Duran’s importance even greater.
While injuries have forced Texas to constantly shuffle its roster, Duran has provided the stability the team desperately needed. He can move from shortstop to third base, shift into the outfield, step into the lineup and still produce at the plate.
For Schumaker, however, Duran’s value goes beyond statistics and defensive flexibility.
“The energy he brings daily, it’s real. It’s not fake, it’s not fluff,” the manager said.
That energy, combined with his ability to play virtually anywhere and deliver in high-pressure moments, has helped Texas remain competitive when the season could easily have slipped away.
The Rangers may have stars on their roster, but as their playoff chase enters a crucial stage, one of their biggest advantages could be the player willing to do almost everything.
Ezequiel Duran may have started the season as a super-utility player, but in Texas, he has become exactly what his nickname promised: The Solution.
