After an extraordinary MLB debut against the Chicago Cubs, Báez is being moved from the No. 5 spot to leadoff for the Cardinals’ first game against Cincinnati.
That is a notable change because Báez had hit fifth in his most recent game against Chicago. The Cardinals are therefore giving their young slugger an opportunity to set the table at the very top of the lineup rather than simply providing power in the middle of the order.
The decision comes immediately after Báez produced one of the most remarkable debuts imaginable. On Saturday against the Cubs, he became the first player in MLB history to hit three home runs in his first three career at-bats, helping St. Louis beat Chicago 8-4.
His three homers came in three different directions, highlighting the impressive raw power that made him one of the Cardinals’ most intriguing prospects. He finished his debut with three home runs and five RBIs.
Why the move is significant
Putting Báez at the top of the lineup suggests the Cardinals are interested in seeing whether his impact can extend beyond simply hitting for power. As a leadoff hitter, he will have an opportunity to get an additional plate appearance and potentially ignite the offense from the opening inning.
It is also a particularly interesting decision because Báez had only recently arrived in the majors. St. Louis called up the 23-year-old from Triple-A Memphis for his debut, replacing infielder César Prieto on the active roster. MLB Pipeline ranked Báez as the Cardinals’ No. 3 prospect and No. 59 overall prospect.
Before his promotion, Báez had already demonstrated substantial power in Triple-A. He entered the majors after hitting 34 home runs and driving in 90 runs in 103 games for Memphis.
The timing makes sense for St. Louis
The Cardinals are coming off back-to-back victories over the Cubs, including an 11-4 win Sunday. They now face a Cincinnati team whose pitching staff is dealing with significant workload concerns during a demanding five-games-in-four-days stretch.
That makes Báez’s promotion to the leadoff spot especially intriguing. St. Louis has an opportunity to attack a worn-down Reds pitching staff, and putting one of the hottest hitters in baseball at the top of the lineup could allow the Cardinals to apply pressure immediately.
There is also a broader strategic element. Báez is expected to have his playing time carefully managed, so moving him around the lineup gives manager Oliver Marmol flexibility while the organization evaluates how the rookie handles major league pitching.
In short: the Cardinals aren’t merely rewarding Báez for his historic debut. They’re testing him in a much more prominent role by putting him at the top of the lineup against Cincinnati, giving the rookie a chance to become an offensive catalyst as St. Louis enters a crucial stretch of the season.
