The Philadelphia Phillies may have uncovered an important piece for their bullpen at a crucial point in the season, with right-hander Alex McFarlane beginning to show why the organization has been so intrigued by his potential.
Philadelphia has spent much of the season searching for dependable relief options beyond closer Jhoan Duran. The bullpen has experienced significant inconsistency, with several pitchers dealing with injuries, demotions and stretches of poor performance. The Phillies attempted to strengthen the group at the trade deadline by bringing in veterans Brooks Raley and Caleb Kilian, but Kilian suffered an injury that could keep him out for the remainder of the season, while Raley has shown signs of regression.
McFarlane, meanwhile, has quietly emerged as one of the more encouraging developments in the relief corps. Although he was called up to the majors several times earlier this season, he did not begin receiving regular opportunities until Aug. 11. Since then, he has made nine appearances following his latest promotion and has looked increasingly comfortable against major-league hitters.
The most impressive part of McFarlane’s game has been his overpowering arsenal. Entering Wednesday’s action, his fastball was averaging an eye-catching 99.8 mph, demonstrating the elite velocity that made him such an intriguing prospect in the minor leagues. He had also struck out 10 batters across 9.1 innings while generating a 26.5% whiff rate.
However, McFarlane’s development has not been without concerns. His control remains the biggest question surrounding his ability to become a reliable late-inning option. He has issued five walks during his brief major-league stint, while 46.5% of his pitches have been outside the strike zone. Although that figure represents an improvement from the 50.7% rate he posted in Triple-A, it remains an area the Phillies will want him to improve.
Despite those command issues, McFarlane has provided Philadelphia with much-needed stability. He has been charged with only three runs in his major-league appearances, and just one of those runs was earned. He has surrendered only four hits, showing that his combination of velocity and swing-and-miss stuff can make him difficult for opposing hitters to handle.
The Phillies have primarily deployed McFarlane in the sixth and seventh innings, giving him opportunities in medium-leverage situations while he adjusts to the demands of the majors. Interestingly, he has already collected four victories, largely because Philadelphia’s offense has produced runs late in games following his appearances. While wins for a reliever can be heavily dependent on circumstances, McFarlane’s ability to keep games under control has contributed to those opportunities.
With the postseason approaching, the Phillies now face an intriguing decision regarding how aggressively to use the young right-hander. Interim manager Don Mattingly and the coaching staff could gradually increase McFarlane’s responsibilities and expose him to higher-pressure situations. Doing so would allow the organization to determine whether he can handle meaningful postseason innings before October arrives.
Another possibility is that Philadelphia keeps McFarlane in his current middle-relief role, allowing him to continue building confidence without immediately placing him in the most demanding situations. That approach could be especially useful given his remaining command concerns.
Either way, McFarlane has given the Phillies another reason to feel encouraged about their bullpen. His elite fastball, strikeout ability and improving performance have made him a pitcher worth watching during the final month of the regular season.
If he can reduce the walks and consistently locate his pitches inside the strike zone, McFarlane could move from being an intriguing young arm into a legitimate option for higher-leverage innings. With Philadelphia fighting for postseason positioning, his emergence could prove particularly valuable if the bullpen needs another dependable weapon.
For now, McFarlane remains a work in progress, but the early results are certainly promising. His recent performances suggest the Phillies may have found a high-upside reliever at precisely the moment when additional bullpen depth could make a major difference.
