The New York Mets are facing an offseason filled with difficult decisions after a 2026 campaign that failed to meet expectations, and one of the most intriguing questions now surrounds Mark Vientos. Following the Mets’ 2-1 loss to the Baltimore Orioles on Monday, New York was officially eliminated from playoff contention, bringing an abrupt end to a season that has been described as a major disappointment. With the organization now looking toward 2027, significant roster changes could be coming, and Vientos is reportedly one of the players whose future could be in serious question.
According to Heavy, MLB.com writer Mark Feinsand identified Vientos as one of the top trade candidates to watch during the upcoming offseason. The possibility is particularly interesting because Vientos remains only 26 years old and has already demonstrated that he can be a legitimate power threat at the major-league level. However, his struggles over the past two seasons have caused his stock to decline considerably, creating a situation in which the Mets could either attempt to rebuild his value or decide that a change of scenery would benefit both the player and the organization.
Vientos’ Recent Struggles Have Changed His Mets Outlook
Vientos’ 2026 campaign has been a major step backward from the potential he displayed earlier in his career. Through 80 games this season, he has produced 13 home runs and 39 RBI while batting only .214. Those numbers represent a significant decline from his 2025 production, when he hit 17 home runs with 61 RBI and a .233 batting average across 121 games.
The decline becomes even more notable when compared with what Vientos accomplished in 2024. That season remains the strongest argument for another club potentially taking a chance on him. In 111 games, Vientos hit 27 home runs, drove in 71 runs and posted a .266 batting average, establishing career highs across those major offensive categories. His 2024 performance demonstrated that there is legitimate middle-of-the-order power in his bat, even though he has struggled to reproduce that production consistently since then.
That previous success could ultimately make Vientos more attractive on the trade market than his current numbers suggest. A rival team could look at his age, power history and relatively affordable contract situation and conclude that he is a prime candidate for a change-of-scenery move.
Why Other Teams Could Take a Chance on Him
The biggest attraction for potential suitors is the possibility that Vientos could rediscover the offensive form he showed in 2024. Players with legitimate home-run power can remain valuable even after a prolonged slump, particularly when they are still young enough to make adjustments.
Vientos has already shown that he can produce substantial power over a full season. His 27-homer campaign in 2024 gives other organizations a tangible example of what he might become if placed in a different offensive environment, given a clearer role or helped by a new coaching staff.
His contract situation could also make him easier to acquire. Feinsand noted that the Mets could potentially non-tender Vientos, but his expected price entering his first year of arbitration could be low enough that another team might prefer to acquire him through a trade rather than wait for him to become available. That creates an interesting decision for New York: move him while there is still some perceived upside, or keep him and attempt to restore his value internally.
The Mets Have a Difficult Decision to Make
For New York, trading Vientos would not be a decision without risk. The Mets have already invested considerable time in his development, and moving him after a poor season could potentially turn into a mistake if he immediately rebounds with another organization.
At 26, Vientos is hardly a finished player. His age gives him plenty of time to make adjustments and regain the power stroke that made him one of the more intriguing young hitters in the organization. If he were to be traded and subsequently return to his 2024 form, the Mets could find themselves watching a former player produce elsewhere while New York searches for additional offensive production.
That possibility is why the organization could reasonably decide to give him another opportunity in 2027. A strong spring training and a better start to next season could quickly change the conversation surrounding his future and potentially increase his trade value if New York ultimately decides to move him later.
A Trade Could Still Make Sense
Despite the risks, there is also a strong argument for the Mets to explore the trade market. New York needs to make substantial changes after missing the postseason, and the front office cannot afford to become overly attached to players who have failed to establish consistent production.
If another club views Vientos more favorably than the Mets currently do and offers a worthwhile return, New York would have to seriously consider the opportunity. A trade could allow the Mets to convert an inconsistent young hitter into pitching, prospects or another roster piece that better fits their 2027 plans.
The key would be avoiding a trade simply for the sake of making a move. Because Vientos still possesses considerable upside, the Mets would need to receive meaningful value in return. Moving him for a marginal return could leave New York regretting the decision if he rebounds elsewhere.
The Bigger Picture for the Mets
The Vientos situation is ultimately part of a much larger offseason evaluation for the Mets. After being eliminated from playoff contention, the organization must determine which players should remain part of the 2027 core and which should be moved aside in favor of new talent.
