Nick Castellanos, the former Philadelphia Phillies All-Star outfielder, remains without an MLB team as the 2026 regular season approaches its conclusion. The 34-year-old was released by the San Diego Padres in June after a difficult stint with the club, and as of September 22, he has yet to find another opportunity in the majors. MLB’s transaction records confirm that San Diego released Castellanos on June 5 after designating him for assignment two days earlier.
Castellanos’ situation is particularly notable because he entered 2026 as a player with a substantial résumé and multiple All-Star appearances. After being released by Philadelphia in February, he signed with San Diego and received another opportunity to revive his career. Instead, his time with the Padres lasted only 39 games. He struggled offensively, batting just .191 with 22 hits, four home runs, 20 RBIs, nine runs scored and two stolen bases before San Diego moved on from him.
The Padres represented what was supposed to be a fresh start for Castellanos following an increasingly difficult final season in Philadelphia. San Diego signed him in February after the Phillies released him, with the Padres reportedly taking on only the prorated major-league minimum while Philadelphia remained responsible for most of the money left on his contract. At 34, he still has considerable major-league experience, a history of All-Star production and postseason exposure, but his recent numbers have made his next opportunity less certain. The fact that he remains unsigned this late in the 2026 season means any potential return would likely involve a team evaluating him primarily as a veteran depth or short-term offensive option rather than automatically giving him an everyday role.
