The Arkansas Razorbacks are set to begin their Southeastern Conference schedule Friday night when they welcome the Auburn Tigers to Fayetteville for a highly anticipated matchup on Sept. 25. The contest marks the start of conference play for Arkansas and gives the Razorbacks an early opportunity to make a statement against one of the SEC’s strongest teams so far this season.
The match will also be a welcome return home for Arkansas, which has not played in front of its home crowd in nearly a month. The Razorbacks opened the season by hosting the Razorback Invitational in August, where they immediately established momentum by winning all three matches. Arkansas went on to finish its non-conference schedule with an impressive 8-3 record, setting the stage for a challenging SEC campaign.
Auburn enters the matchup with an even stronger record. The Tigers are 10-2 heading into Friday’s contest, with both of their defeats coming against nationally ranked opponents. Auburn fell to No. 11 Minnesota on Sept. 2 before losing to No. 5 Wisconsin the following day, meaning the Tigers have already faced high-level competition early in the season.
Statistically, Auburn has shown considerable balance. The Tigers rank 10th in the SEC in hitting percentage at .259, while their defense has been particularly impressive. Auburn is allowing opponents to hit only .160, the best opponent hitting percentage in the conference. That defensive efficiency could present one of Arkansas’ biggest challenges as the Razorbacks attempt to establish their attack.
Auburn is also among the SEC’s better teams in several other statistical categories. The Tigers are averaging 13.74 kills per set, 12.35 assists per set and 13.98 digs per set, highlighting a team capable of producing pressure both offensively and defensively.
Arkansas, however, enters the conference opener with several statistical advantages of its own. The Razorbacks are particularly strong at the net, averaging 2.77 blocks per set, compared with Auburn’s 2.35. That figure ranks Arkansas second in the SEC, making blocking one of the team’s biggest strengths heading into the matchup.
The Razorbacks also have a slight edge in serving. Arkansas is averaging 1.57 aces per set, narrowly ahead of Auburn’s 1.56. While the difference is minimal, Arkansas’ ability to create pressure from the service line could become important against an Auburn team that has been difficult to attack consistently.
Overall, Arkansas is hitting .249, averaging 12.81 kills, 12.00 assists and 13.38 digs per set, while opponents are hitting .169 against the Razorbacks. The numbers suggest that Friday’s match could develop into a battle between Auburn’s strong defensive efficiency and Arkansas’ blocking and serving ability.
History also favors the Razorbacks. Arkansas owns a 44-13 all-time record against Auburn, including an impressive 23-4 mark in Fayetteville. The Razorbacks have also performed well when beginning SEC play in recent seasons, going 4-1 in their last five conference openers. Under head coach Jason Watson, Arkansas is 7-3 in SEC-opening matches.
That history gives Arkansas plenty of confidence heading into Friday, but Auburn’s current form means the Razorbacks cannot afford to rely solely on past results. The Tigers have already demonstrated that they can compete against some of the nation’s top-ranked programs, making the SEC opener an important early test for both teams.
Friday’s match will also have a special atmosphere at the Barn as Arkansas celebrates Dolly Parton Night. Fans can expect Dolly-themed entertainment throughout the evening, along with poster and sticker giveaways and Dolly Parton’s greatest hits playing inside the arena. The combination of the SEC opener and the special-event atmosphere should give Arkansas a lively home-court advantage.

With Auburn entering at 10-2 and Arkansas beginning conference play at 8-3, Friday’s matchup represents an early measuring stick for both programs.
