Two of the most important young pieces in the St. Louis Cardinals’ rebuilding plans delivered standout performances Wednesday night, even though Double-A Springfield ultimately fell short in the Texas League Finals.
Top Cardinals prospect Rainiel Rodriguez provided the offensive highlight, while highly regarded left-hander Liam Doyle turned in another impressive postseason outing. Their performances came in Springfield’s decisive Game 3 against Amarillo, with the Sod Poodles eventually pulling away for a 6-4 victory and ending the Cardinals’ bid for a second consecutive Texas League championship.
For St. Louis, however, the result was only part of the story. The bigger takeaway was the continued development of two players who could become significant contributors to the organization in the coming years.
Rodriguez, just 19 years old, once again showed why he is regarded as one of the brightest offensive prospects in the Cardinals’ system. The organization’s No. 1 prospect and MLB Pipeline’s No. 16 overall prospect, Rodriguez delivered a huge moment in the third inning when he launched a two-run home run to straightaway left field.
The blast was particularly impressive because of how hard he struck it. Trackman measured the exit velocity at 110 mph, underscoring the raw power that has made Rodriguez such an intriguing prospect. His home run temporarily gave Springfield a 2-1 advantage and provided the kind of impact the Cardinals hope to see from him as he continues moving through the organization.
Rodriguez’s performance was another fitting ending to a highly productive season. He spent time at both High-A and Double-A in 2026, appearing in 28 games at High-A and 87 games at Double-A. Across his three minor-league seasons, the young hitter has continued to establish himself as a consistent offensive threat, producing a .324/.413/.574 slash line with 27 home runs.
Although Rodriguez is primarily known as a catcher, his defensive development remains an important part of his progression. The Cardinals have already begun giving him opportunities at other positions, including first base, where he started Wednesday’s game. That positional flexibility could become increasingly important as the organization determines the best way to maximize his bat while continuing to develop his defensive game.
Doyle, meanwhile, delivered another encouraging performance on the mound. The Cardinals’ No. 2 prospect and MLB Pipeline’s No. 41 overall prospect completed five innings while allowing only one run. Importantly, the lone run charged against him was unearned.
The 22-year-old left-hander struck out six batters, walked two and surrendered four hits while throwing 89 pitches, including 56 strikes. His strong outing continued an impressive postseason run in which he has allowed only two runs, one earned, over 8⅔ innings across two starts.
Doyle’s ability to miss bats remains one of the biggest reasons the Cardinals are so high on his long-term potential. Selected fifth overall in the 2025 MLB Draft out of Tennessee, Doyle spent the entire 2026 season at Double-A Springfield. Over 23 starts, he posted a 3.76 ERA while striking out an impressive 130 hitters in 103 innings.
There were some concerns with his command, as walks occasionally became an issue, but his ability to overpower opposing hitters continued to stand out. His postseason performances offered another indication that the left-hander can handle increasingly difficult competition as he progresses toward the major leagues.
The performances of Rodriguez and Doyle are particularly significant because the Cardinals have entered a new phase of roster construction. St. Louis traded several established veterans during the offseason, including Sonny Gray, Willson Contreras and Brendan Donovan, moves that appeared to signal a much deeper rebuilding process.
Instead, the major-league Cardinals remained competitive for much of the 2026 season. Young players such as Jordan Walker and J.J. Wetherholt provided encouraging signs, giving the organization additional reasons to believe that its next competitive core could begin taking shape sooner than expected.
Rodriguez and Doyle are not necessarily expected to break camp with the major-league club when the 2027 season begins. At their respective stages of development, the Cardinals may prefer to give both prospects additional time to refine their games. Still, their progress suggests they could be moving closer to St. Louis than they were at the beginning of the year.
There is also a possibility that their 2026 campaigns are not completely finished. Depending on organizational plans, both players could receive a promotion to Triple-A Memphis for at least two additional games, giving them another opportunity to face more advanced competition before entering the offseason.
For Rodriguez, the next challenge will involve continuing to develop defensively while maintaining the offensive production that has made him one of baseball’s most closely watched young hitters. For Doyle, limiting walks and continuing to harness his strikeout ability will be key as he moves toward the upper levels of the Cardinals’ pitching system.
Ultimately, Springfield’s championship defeat does little to diminish the importance of what Rodriguez and Doyle accomplished throughout the season. The Cardinals may have fallen short of another Double-A title, but the performances of two of their highest-rated prospects offered another glimpse into what the organization’s next generation could eventually bring to St. Louis.
