Today, September 14, 2025, marks the 70th birthday of Pope Leo XIV — born Robert Francis Prevost — the first American-born pontiff in the history of the Roman Catholic Church. To celebrate, he offered thanks to God, his parents, and everyone who has kept him in their prayers. As part of the observance, he gave his regular noon blessing in St. Peter’s Square, where the faithful had assembled with banners, balloons, and applause. Later, he led an ecumenical prayer service honouring 21st-century martyrs.
Pope Leo XIV was elected just a few months ago, in May 2025, when he was 69 years old. His election made history: as a Chicago native, with dual ties (including time as a missionary in Peru), he stands as the first U.S.–born individual to assume the papacy. The milestone birthday is being observed modestly yet meaningfully, combining public celebration with spiritual reflection.
