SHOCKING NEWS: Astros Sign 28 Years Old Outfielder from Rival Rangers’ System

The rivalry between the Houston Astros and Texas Rangers has intensified significantly in recent years. Since their dramatic postseason clash in 2023, a seven-game series won by Texas en route to the franchise’s first World Series championship, both clubs have consistently tried to outdo one another. The competition also plays out annually in the battle for the Silver Boot, which Houston captured last season by sweeping Texas in September and finishing with a 7–6 edge in the season series.

This week, the Astros made a quieter move that could still be viewed as a small victory over their in-state rivals. According to official transaction records, Houston signed outfielder Kellen Strahm to a minor-league contract on Tuesday. The move became public on Friday, when the Astros also extended Strahm an invitation to major league spring training.

Strahm was originally selected by the Rangers in the fifth round of the 2019 MLB Draft out of San Jose State. He spent his entire professional career in Texas’ farm system, appearing in 544 games overall, including 149 at the Triple-A level. In November, he chose free agency for the first time.

Although the 28-year-old has yet to make his major league debut, his strong plate discipline may have attracted Houston’s attention. Over his minor league career, Strahm has drawn 324 walks, helping him post a .371 on-base percentage despite a .265 batting average.

While many non-roster invitees fail to make a lasting impression, Strahm could turn this opportunity into something more. If he emerges as a contributor for the Astros, it would represent a subtle but meaningful win over the Rangers. With Houston among the teams most in need of outfield help, players like Strahm may have a real chance to earn a roster spot if they perform well in Arizona when spring training begins next month.
