Former Auburn wide receiver Camden Brown made an immediate statement in his first NFL preseason appearance, turning three targets into three receptions for 62 yards and two touchdowns as the Dallas Cowboys defeated the Seattle Seahawks 17-7.
Brown’s debut was one of the most impressive performances of the night, particularly considering the limited opportunities he received. He caught every pass thrown his way and consistently demonstrated the size, athleticism and aggressive mentality that made him an intriguing prospect coming out of college.
For Brown, the performance represented a dramatic contrast to his relatively limited production during his time at Auburn. Despite showing flashes of significant potential during his three seasons on the Plains, he never received the consistent opportunities many believed his talent warranted.
Now, just one preseason game into his professional career, Brown has given the Cowboys another reason to keep watching him closely.
Brown Makes Every Opportunity Count
Brown’s numbers against Seattle were remarkably efficient.
He finished with three catches for 62 yards and two touchdowns, averaging more than 20 yards per reception. More importantly, he caught all three passes directed his way, making sure that virtually every opportunity resulted in production.
His two touchdowns demonstrated his ability to make plays in the red zone, while his overall yardage showed that he can also create explosive plays downfield.
The performance was particularly noteworthy because Brown is trying to establish himself as an undrafted player fighting for a place on the Cowboys’ roster. With limited opportunities available, every practice rep and preseason target matters.
Dallas head coach Brian Schottenheimer has already indicated that Brown’s performance was not a surprise to the coaching staff.
According to Schottenheimer, Brown has been producing similar plays throughout training camp and has consistently demonstrated that he belongs in the competition for a roster spot.
The coach also praised Brown for doing more than simply catching passes. His work on special teams and willingness to compete during individual drills have helped him stand out during camp.
That versatility could become extremely important as Brown attempts to secure a permanent position on the Cowboys’ roster.
A Different Story From His Auburn Years
Brown’s NFL debut also reopened the conversation about what might have been during his college career.
He arrived at Auburn with considerable promise and quickly attracted attention during his first fall camp in 2022. However, his opportunities in the Tigers’ offense never matched the expectations surrounding his talent.
Brown began his Auburn career under Bryan Harsin, who had helped bring him into the program after Brown had initially been committed elsewhere.
The circumstances surrounding Auburn’s offense made it difficult for the freshman receiver to establish himself as a major weapon.
During the 2022 season, Brown finished with only nine receptions for 123 yards and two touchdowns. While those numbers were modest, they also showed his potential as a big-play threat, particularly considering the limited number of opportunities he received.
Auburn’s passing game struggled to consistently push the ball downfield, which made it difficult for Brown to maximize his skill set.
Hugh Freeze Era Brought More Competition
Brown’s situation became even more complicated after Harsin’s departure and the arrival of Hugh Freeze.
By the 2023 season, Auburn had several receivers competing for targets, including Caleb Burton III, Jay Fair and Ja’Varrius Johnson. Freeze also brought in additional talent as he attempted to reshape the roster.
Brown was never able to establish himself as the primary receiver many expected him to become.
That is what makes his NFL preseason performance so intriguing.
The physical tools that were evident during his time at Auburn were still there. Brown possessed the ability to make difficult catches, attack the football in the air and create explosive plays. The difference in Dallas was that he was finally given opportunities to demonstrate those abilities on a larger stage.
And he made the most of them.
Georgia Southern Showed What Brown Could Do
Interestingly, the clearest evidence of Brown’s offensive potential came not from Auburn, but from Georgia Southern.
Before entering the professional ranks, Brown spent a season at Georgia Southern and enjoyed a breakout campaign. He caught 65 passes for 1,079 yards and scored 14 touchdowns, leading the Sun Belt in touchdown receptions.
That season provided a glimpse of what Brown could become when given a consistent role in an offense.
His production at Georgia Southern was dramatically different from what he managed at Auburn, and the contrast has fueled the argument that the Tigers never fully unlocked his potential.
The Cowboys now appear to be giving him another opportunity to prove that his production can translate against higher-level competition.
Brown’s Mentality Has Remained Consistent
Following his impressive debut, Brown explained that his approach to the game has remained consistent throughout his college and professional career.
His philosophy is simple: when the football is in the air, he believes it belongs to him.
That mentality was visible against Seattle.
Brown played aggressively, attacked opportunities and showed the confidence necessary for a receiver attempting to make an NFL roster. Rather than looking overwhelmed by the speed or physicality of professional football, he appeared comfortable from the opening snap.
That confidence could become one of his biggest advantages as training camp continues.
Cowboys Have a New Receiver to Watch
Dallas has plenty of competition at wide receiver, which means Brown’s impressive debut does not guarantee that he will make the final roster.
However, it certainly strengthens his case.
Undrafted players generally have little margin for error during the preseason. Coaches need to see production, consistency, effort and versatility, and Brown demonstrated all four against Seattle.
His ability to contribute on special teams could also help separate him from other receivers competing for similar roster spots.
If he continues producing at this level, the Cowboys will have a difficult decision to make when final roster cuts arrive.
The most encouraging part for Dallas is that his two-touchdown performance apparently reflects what the coaching staff has already been seeing during practice.
Schottenheimer’s comments suggest that Brown has not suddenly become a different player. Instead, the preseason opener simply gave him a larger stage on which to display what he had already been showing behind the scenes.
Auburn’s “What If?” Story Continues
Brown’s emergence also adds another chapter to one of the more intriguing “what if” stories from Auburn football’s recent history.
The Tigers had Brown during a difficult period for the program, but they never consistently turned his physical gifts into major production.
His success at Georgia Southern demonstrated what could happen when he became a focal point of an offense. Now, his early success with Dallas could provide another reminder of the talent Auburn had on its roster but was unable to fully utilize.
Brown’s professional career is obviously still in its infancy, and one preseason game does not guarantee long-term success.
But the early signs are undeniably encouraging.
He has already shown that he can make explosive plays, finish in the red zone and catch everything thrown his way. He has also earned praise from his head coach for his work ethic and willingness to contribute beyond offense.
A Chance to Rewrite His Story
For Brown, the opportunity in Dallas is about more than simply making an NFL roster. It is a chance to prove that the limited production he posted at Auburn never accurately reflected his true ability.
His three-catch, 62-yard, two-touchdown performance against Seattle was an ideal first step.
The Cowboys now have several more preseason opportunities to evaluate him, and Brown will have to maintain the same level of consistency to turn his impressive debut into a legitimate roster opportunity.
If he does, his journey from Auburn’s underutilized receiver to a potential NFL contributor could become one of the more interesting preseason stories to follow.
Camden Brown could not have asked for a much better NFL debut. After years of limited opportunities at Auburn, the former Tigers receiver exploded for two touchdowns with Dallas, giving Cowboys coaches another reason to believe he can turn his long-awaited potential into legitimate NFL production.
