The St. Louis Cardinals have officially parted ways with veteran first baseman and outfielder Bligh Madris, releasing the 30-year-old from his minor league contract after an impressive offensive season at Triple-A Memphis. The move clears the way for Madris to continue his professional career overseas after securing a deal with a club in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) League.
According to reports, Madris is set to head to South Korea, where he will receive a guaranteed contract and a fresh opportunity to play regularly at the highest level. The move represents a significant career shift for the veteran, who was unable to break into the Cardinals’ major league roster despite producing one of the strongest offensive campaigns in the organization’s minor league system.
Madris joined St. Louis on a minor league deal before the 2026 season and quickly became one of Triple-A Memphis’ most productive hitters. Across 284 plate appearances, he posted an impressive .277 batting average, .389 on-base percentage, and .519 slugging percentage, while launching 14 home runs and consistently providing middle-of-the-order production.
Despite those standout numbers, a promotion to the major leagues never materialized.
The Cardinals’ roster construction left little room for Madris to earn an opportunity. His primary position, first base, is firmly occupied by emerging slugger Alec Burleson, while the club’s outfield is already crowded with several established left-handed hitters. Designated hitter at-bats have also largely been reserved for Ivan Herrera, further limiting Madris’ path to St. Louis.
Adding to the challenge, the Cardinals remain committed to evaluating younger talent during their rebuilding phase, making it increasingly difficult for veteran depth players like Madris to force their way onto the active roster.
Rather than continue waiting for a potential opening created by injuries or roster changes, Madris opted to capitalize on his outstanding Triple-A performance by accepting an opportunity in one of Asia’s premier professional baseball leagues.
The KBO has become an increasingly attractive destination for former Major League players seeking everyday roles, competitive salaries and the chance to revive or extend their careers. For Madris, the move also provides financial security through a guaranteed contract while offering regular playing time against top international competition.
This marks the second time Madris has played overseas, having previously spent part of the 2020-21 season in the Australian Baseball League before returning to North America.
Although he has consistently excelled at the Triple-A level throughout his professional career, translating that success to the major leagues has proven difficult.
Over 2,085 career Triple-A plate appearances, Madris owns an impressive .255/.350/.450 slash line, demonstrating the offensive consistency that has kept him in demand throughout professional baseball.
His major league production, however, has been much more limited.
Between 2022 and 2024, Madris appeared with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Houston Astros, and Detroit Tigers, compiling a career .204 batting average, .273 on-base percentage, and .286 slugging percentage across 228 major league plate appearances.
His most productive stretch came with Detroit during the 2024 season, when he hit .269/.324/.358 over 75 plate appearances, showing flashes of becoming a reliable bench contributor.
Following that season, the Tigers outrighted Madris off their 40-man roster before re-signing him to another minor league contract. Unfortunately, injuries limited him to just 60 minor league games in 2025, preventing him from earning another call-up to the majors.
Now, after another productive campaign in Triple-A failed to earn him a return to the big leagues, Madris will begin a new chapter in South Korea.
For the Cardinals, his departure removes an experienced organizational depth option while reflecting the club’s continued emphasis on developing younger players. For Madris, the move offers a fresh start, greater financial stability and the opportunity to become an impact player in one of the world’s most competitive professional baseball leagues.
